Men's suit trousers - machine washable but still decent - do they exist?

Ruby 2, 9 February, 2009 at 08:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

My husband is searching high and low and frankly, driving me crazy ?

He's not looking for a whole suit - just suit style trousers. They need to be smart for work, but the nature of his job [in a hospital] means he can get messy - so dry clean only trousers just aren't a practical option. We've looked in M&S, Next, Burtons, Top Man, TXMaxx, and a few other high street shops I can't recall. All the machine washable trousers seem to be made of synthetic fabric, and to be honest, just look cheap and nasty. They just don't hang very nicely, and wrinkle with every movement.

Do you just have to go for dry-clean trousers to get anything of quality?

Oh, and I suggested chinos or cords but he's not keen. To be fair, they're not really smart enough for his work, and he already had a wardrobe full of smart shirts that will really only go with 'suit trousers'

If anyone can offer any help, i'd be extremely grateful. I'm just bored of hearing about it now! Thank you ?

    Have you tried Slater's Menswear?

I've got a Matalan suit I use for dirty site visits - it's nowhere near what I'd wear to the office but it's decent enough.

Thanks all. Ashke, i've never heard of Slaters Menswear...will look them up, thank you.

Now, as for Matalan, thank you for the suggestion...i certainly do buy things there, and i'm not a snob about it....but i really can't imagine the quality being what H is requiring here. He's a doctor, so does have to look smart really...but by the same token, his clothes need to be hard wearing. As Baron says - his Matalan suit is nowhere near what he'd wear to the office, so i'm not really sure trousers from Matalan are going to cut it. As i say, i really don't mean to be snooty....but that's the problem...we're looking for suit trousers that have the quality of dry clean only, but are machine washable. I'm starting to think we're looking for the impossible...

Thank you for your replies, very much appreciated

You are looking for the impossible - machine washable trousers are inevitably poor quality. I'm not quite sure why he needs to look smart but potentially get dirty? Hospital doctors I know will happily wear chinos if the circumstances demand. Is this down to his perception of how he needs to look rather than the hospital's?

Baron, yes - i suspected we were looking for the impossible, but I guess we just wanted to make sure we'd explored all the options.

I think chinos are the way forward, but H has always had a real thing against them. I think he thinks they're a bit preppy, a bit smart-casual? I think it's irrational and he should bite the bullet - it's only a uniform of sorts anyway isn't it?

He wants to look smart to make a good impression of course, but very long shifts and the inevitable erm, stainage means he needs to be practical.

Actually - maybe hearing it from someone other than me will convince him that what he's looking for doesn't exist, so thank you! ?

MrJMP has a couple of 'after work drinking suits' these are suits he changes into to go out after work & if they get ruined, puked or trashed, he does not care.

    M&S or Tesco - Think it's £30 for the suit - £10 trousers & £20 jacket

They have had a battering & still look as good as his Hugo suits or the posher M&S ones.

I think with men's suit trousers they need to be pressed & hung daily to maintain the guts in them.

Thanks Mrs JMP. Maybe we need to revisit M&S - the ones he tried on there just seemed shiny, and they seemed to wrinkle so much with every step. Perhaps the ones that are part of a suit are better - and at £30 a throw, he could buy the whole suit for the sake of getting the decent trousers.

Tesco's a bit trickier - we can't really get to any of the big ones that do clothes as we don't have a car...but good to know.

    thanks for your reply.
