    Hi,

I normally use either a handkerchief or a buttonhole (as the outer breast welt pocket is very close to the lapel hole). One or other looks better so as not to over crowd the one side of the jacket.

I have seen some unusual alternatives to button holes. I saw a Hugh Harris http://www.brownweddinghire.co.uk/ showing a brown tail suit with a starfish (shaped object) instead of a button hole.

I have also seen some unusual button hole designs from these people before : http://www.flowowers.co.uk/gallery02.htm I would assume they are bespoke.

If you prefer a handkerchief but would like something different then you could learn to fold the handkerchief in different ways. I have an old book which has lots of different folds in, which could look cool and interesting.

The other thing that I have done before, is fold two different colour handkerchiefs together to get a two-tone affect. That can be quite interesting.

    Thanks

    Marc

Also, just thought about this, Lapel Pins! worn where the button-hole normally would be. These are sometimes charity pins or society pins or clubs or groups. There are lots to choose from, depending on how ornate you want, I am sure a jeweller could make you a bespoke pin for the day. Just an idea.

Thanks for all your ideas mark. Are handkerchiefs still in fashion then (my h2b is only 24)? I have quite a bit of fabric left from my bridesmaids dress & another colour with this would look lovely...are handkerchiefs easy to make???or would i need 2 go 2 someone???if i went to someone how much on average would this cost?

Mark have you ever heard of only the groom wearing a buttonhole & the rest of the men wearing no flowers- i dont really like flowers all that much but thinkit would distinguish the groom from the others???

    Hi,

Hankies are easy to make, just make a 10" square and either hand roll the edges and fell them in or machine around the edges. I charge around £4.00 each to make them.

Handkerchiefs are so old-fashioned they are VERY fashionable. My younger clients like all that sort of thing, but the older guys just would not wear it!

I have done weddings with only the Groom wearing a button-hole. I do not think there is a right or wrong way, It is up to you. I would suggest speaking to your florist or a florist (or if there are any florist here on hitched) and seeing what ideas they can come up with.

Sorry to butt in, I was planning for the men to have hankies which I have had made out of the same fabric as the bridesmaids dresses and buttonholes, are you saying this is too much or not the done thing?

    TIA?

I normally advise to not have both as they are on the same side. And quite close together (if you are using tails) But it is a personal decision. Traditionally buttonholes are for morning wear (tails etc) and handkerchiefs for eveningwear (Dinner jackets bowties etc).

But everyone has an opinion and I think you should have alook in some mgazines and some pictures before deciding.

As marc says its totally your choice but i have also been advised to have either a button hole or a hanky because the both together can look too much. i wouldnt have known this before going to several suit shops though

Levant leather is a soft, durable material known for its gently pebbled texture and classy look. It’s comfortable to wear, easy to maintain, and adds a touch of elegance to everyday items. Whether on jackets or accessories, it brings a friendly, refined vibe without feeling too formal.
