Mirena coil experiences please

Ellena, 25 May, 2008 at 14:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

I've been on depo for over 11 years now and I have no problems with it.
However, H is keen I try something else as he's convinced it's preventing me losing weight. I have lost weight twice while on it, through diet and exercise, but I wonder if it could be having more effect now I'm older.
Family planning nurses always highlight the osteoporosis possibilty and at my latest appt, the mirena coil was suggested. She sold it as the perfect contraception. If it was used straight from depo, she said it was likely I'd continue with no periods. No osteo risk, no weight gain or moody side effects.
I've searched for threads on this, but apart from the pain of having it fitted, how else have people got on with it?

Thanks ?

I was like you and went straight from the depo to the mirena after I'd been on it 7 years and my Grandma was just diagnosed with osteoporosis and I didn't like to take a risk.

It was far more painful to have it fitted than I thought it was going to be, I'm no wuss but it definitely made me feel faint and I was on my own, which wasnt good. It lasted 9 weeks, I had so much pain and couldn't find the cords, ended up at the hospital - after 5 different docs couldn't find it - to have s scan to locate it. Took an hour to find it and have it taken out. It had flipped over and was stuck in the side of me, which was what was causing the pain. Sorry if it wasn't what you wanted to hear

    Hi

I have had it twice, first time great, no problems with fitting.

Second time was after I had my second baby, it was awful, I felt faint and it was really painful. I had problems with cramps and bleeding, so went back about 4 months later. I saw a different Dr and he said it wasn't fitted correctly.

Anyway I had it fitted again, and it has been great, no problems and no periods which is a bonus, I do have very occasional spotting, however this is nothing compared to what I used to go through before I had it.

I would recommend it, I think the problem I had with the second one was down to the Dr fitting it.

Have you had children? I only ask this as apparently it is easier/more comfortable to fit if you have had kids.

I didn't get past the fitting. Make sure you ask for anaesthetic on your bits before they put the clamp on your cervix. I bled a lot and cried afterwards - partly due to pain & feeling butchered but partly because I felt I'd lost my last hope before hysterectomy (I found a pill that worked for me though so it's all OK now).

Christ! That sounds horrendous. Seems problems are caused with bad fitting then? And not a lot you can do about that without trying it. Hmmm...

have you not thought of having the implant in your arm?

it lasts for 3 years and you can have it whilst still on the depo

it stop weight gain as it is a slower release of hormones

I've had one. It worked really well for me, no pmt, no periods, (well I tell a lie one every 3 months lasting 3 days) no mood swings.

It did hurt like hell getting it put in- I had no pain relief and was a trying to be tough saying it didnt hurt. I havent had children either.

It lasts five years true. The only thing I did find is that my OH can feel the threads sometimes.

Well I've had one fitted and it was a bit uncomfortable but I'm amazed to hear these stories of fainting, crying and needing analgesics. I'm one of 6 mates who've got one and none us had problems. When they clamp the cervix it can cause a cramp feeling but for me, it wasn't that bad.

I'm sure Dr Doolittle will be the first to admit her situation was extremely rare?

I'd say go for it, I had a couple of months spotting then nothing. It's working well for me.

I had one fitted after having Isabel 2 years ago and it was great - no periods, pmt etc. I did hurt having it fitted but not unbearable and certainly didn't need an anaesthetic despite gp having to have a couple of attempts to fit it.

I know what happened to me is relatively rare although the doctor at the hospital that removed mine said that they had seen a few cases of women having to have them taken out and she would not normally recommend it to women who haven't had children yet, recommending the implant or injection instead. I wish I had been aware that something like this could happen as I was fobbed off by my own Dr for weeks who thought it just needed time to settle, if I'd realised something really wasn't right I wouldn't have gone through as much pain as I did.

Having mine fitted hurt less than having my regular coil fitted - it was fine. It did make me gain weight though, and sent my sex drive absolutely down the skids.

I had one fitted and it was horrendous. Only had it in for 24 hours and that was sheer agony - what I imagine childbirth to feel like - my womb was contracting to try to get it out. After that experience, I heard that it's only really good for people that have had children. the whole experience makes me shudder.

I've recently had the non hormonal t safe coil fitted, didn't hurt to put in and I've had no problems at all with it.

Had mine fitted 3 months post-birth. No pain during fitting, slight cramping for an hour afterwards. After that nothing. No pain, no spotting, and MrLLB can't feel the cords. Libido isn't sky high at the mo, but then I'm full on breastfeeding and I have a 5 month old and a toddler. I guess those are more likely to have sent my sex drive awol than the coil.

I had the Mirena fitted a few weeks ago. It was uncomfortable to have it fitted, but not much different from a smear really. I'm amazed at all these stories about pain and fainting, my experience was nothing like that. Having said that, I have recently given birth and my baby was just 5 weeks old when I had it fitted. Afterwards, I had a bit of cramping for a few days and I did bleed for about 8-10 days afterwards, but they warn you about that at the consultation. Everything has calmed down now and I have no idea if or when I'll next have a period - it's too early to say.

From what I'v e read on this thread the majority of bad experiences with the coil seem to be in women who haven't given birth. This is what the doctor told me, that was why she didn't like to fit it in women who haven't had children as it is more likely to be dificult to fit and more likely to cause problems after fitting.

I would seriously speak to your doc about the implant.

    I love my mirena! ;o)

I'm a real wuss with an exceptionally low pain threshhold, and I had no issues with the fitting - did 'pinch' a bit, and had some cramping for a few days afterwards, but nothing compared to the period pain I used to have before having it fitted.

I DID end up with a pretty horrific womb infection after having it fitted, but as I had it done a few weeks post partum suspect I was probably battling a bit of an infection anyway - had already had antibiotics for infected stitches. Cleared up with anti biotics, had no problems since then.

Sorry for the tmi, but before the mirena I had a ten to fourteen day period every two to three weeks, during which I had to use both a super tampon and a night time towel pretty much right the way through - I used to get through four packets of each with each period. I now have two days of very light spotting about every ten to twelve weeks. I do find that I end up with a pretty hefty two day headache every six weeks or so, which I put down to a hormonal thing because of the regularity, but to be honest, it's more than a fair swap compared to what I used to put up with!
