Missing passport (UPDATE!)

Bellabop, 15 April, 2008 at 22:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I never post over here! Always on BT but my hubby is in pieces. His passport has gone missing 36hrs before his flight on Thurs to Majorca!

From what I can see online, this cannot be rectified, am I wrong? Is there any hope??

Thanks so much .x.

Thanks for all the advice, after many tears and tantrums we calmly sat down and backtracked and found it in a bag, that he uses every day, but had taken away in Oct on business - was in an obscure pocket!! Thank goodness - much appreciate your help .x.id="red">

Sorry but I think you are out of luck. My H found out two days before we flew last summer that his passport was out of date and it took us four days to get an appointment to fast-track a replacement so we missed some of our holiday. In the case of a lost passport I don't think you can fast-track it because they have to make sure you have actually lost it and are not trying to get one under false pretences.

When did he last have it?

Could it be hiding somewhere odd? I.e. did he have to use if for ID/ a job interview? Could it be in a suit pocket? A brief case? Amonst a pile of paperwork?

You can still obtain emergency replacement passports from your "local" passport office, depending if you can get an appointment.

    Good luck.

    From UKPS:
If you are applying for a passport to replace one that has been lost, stolen or damaged, please bear in mind that, for security reasons, the UKPS will treat it as a ‘first-time#%92 application.
This means that the UKPS will carry out additional checks, requiring you to provide supporting documentation, e.g. birth certificate. As such, replacements take longer to deal with than straightforward renewals.

You must allow at least one week for the replacement of a passport that has been lost, stolen or damaged. For this reason the Premium (same day) service is not available for these applications. However, if you are travelling urgently, you will be able to use our one-week Fast Track service.

Are you sure he has searched absolutely everywhere? Silly places, oh like the back of the sofa, some drawer or other that is rarely used, behind cupboards/bureaus? Pockets of every single jacket/coat/trousers? Shelves? Under the bed? Under the car seats?

I posted about this recently as it happened to one of my friends when we went skiing. All the information we were given was that absolutely nothing could be done for 7 days however, when they went to the passport office on the Friday, after we had all departed on the Thursday, the office we're saying that they would have easily have given her one on the day!

My advice would be to go to your nearest office and see what they say. They seem much more affable in person than on the phone.

    Hi,

    I work for IPS

In the case of missing/lost passports, the fastest way of getting issued with a replacement is by calling to make an appointment. The advice line is open 24 hrs and you can usually make an appointment for the next working day depending on the passport office closest to you. There are offices in Belfast, Glasgow, Durham, Liverpool, Newport, London (5 min for Victoria Station) and Peterborough.

The fastest they will replace a lost passport is 7 days and costs £97.

Emergency replacement are only for life or death emergencies (and they will ask for proof - fax from hospital, doctor etc).

You can make an appointment and go along and ask the examiner conducting your appointment to upgrade to the 4 hour premium service (costs £114), but it is not guarnteed and is at their descresion(sp) as the usually fastest replacement lost or stolen passport is 7 days.

My advice is get hunting and in the meantime call and make an appointment as it will give you a back up.

    Luv Victoria

    xx

That well may be the policy but our friend had hers replaced the following day and was able to join us and just miss one day. This was at the Peterborough office and there were other people there too in same predicament so I would definitely say there was hope.

I presume it is not something they would want to advertise to avoid people being complacent.

As I say its at the descresion(sp) of the examiner dealing with them that particular day and obviously how busy the office in question is.

There are some offices that are more flexible than others. Infact there are 2 in particular that I hate to call as some of the staff I dealt with there have been quite rude to me and I have to identify myself as a fellow member of staff so I dread to think what they are like to the public!?

When I did my training we were told that the staff on the advice line are told to advise people that its 7 days for a lost/stolen/damaged passport replacement but to make them aware that depending on the office and the examiner that day they maybe able to upgrade to the premium serivce and to ask when they arrive for their appointment!

I'd have to agree with LL, there is hope for Mr Bellabop not missing out on his holidays!

    Good luck

    xx

In my experience, passports are rarely lost, merely misplaced. Glad you found it. ?
