Mistake on my wedding certificate!!

Mrs Monkey, 20 July, 2013 at 08:58 Posted on Planning 0 10

We got married yesterday!! It was a lovely day (though felt very surreal) and I was worried I would cry, but I wasn't nervous or over-emotional at all.

Anyway, before the ceremony we checked the rough wedding certificate and then before we signed we read through the real certificate. Then when we got home just after midnight, I got it out to admire and noticed they have put my Dad's middle name as Alvin instead of Albyn!!

Any idea what I can do about that? Will I have to pay to have it changed?

Call the registrar on Monday. It may be that the entry is correct in the register so they will just have to give you a new certificate. If wrong in the register then they can do a correction and they will advise you of the process.

Can you remember checking the register before you signed it?

Yes! We both checked it twice but Alvyn and Albyn look so similar I'm wondering if we missed it. I can't remember.

Sorry your dad will now have to change his name by deed poll. ? well it's an idea!

I am sure they will change it for you, it was obviously their mistake anyway.

    Congratulations and get off Hitched!

I used to be a registrar

Firstly don't panic it's just a simple human error. Go to the register office if you can Monday or at least ring. They will reissue you a new certificate free of charge once you explain.

    Xx

Thanks everyone - you've put my mind at ease. I thought I might get in trouble for not checking it properly even though I was a little bit distracted at the time!

I did laugh at the suggestion that my Dad would have to change his name by deed poll.

If it is wrong in the register they will not just issue you with another certificate!

The register will be amended then a replacement certificate issued.

Ok, if the register is wrong, you will need to write a letter explaining what is wrong, what it should be and how the mistake came to be made. You will also need to provide evidence current at the time of registration eg your father's passport, your birth certificate. Corrections to marriage entries CAN NOT be authorised by the Registrar locally. Your letter and copies of your evidence would need to be sent to the General Register Office for them to authorise the correction. 2 credible witnesses ( I expect you and your husband) would then need to attend the register office to witness the correction. You may request a new certificate then for which the Registrar may request payment, after all, you were asked to check the details carefully I expect. This could all take a few weeks so certainly won't be done on Monday!

If, however, the register is correct then they will take your incorrect certificate and replace it with a new one. Job done!
