Mosquito bites

cinnamonfairy, 21 August, 2012 at 13:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I was waiting at the station at 6am this morning, minding my own business, when I felt a little tickle behind my knee. Just thinking it was my dress brushing the back of my leg, I shrugged it off. I felt another tickle on my foot, and looked down to see a nasty bast@rd mosquito having a nice little munch. Unlucky for him, I killed the bugger!

It was when I got on the train that I noticed the bites on the back of my knee. I was rather annoyed so when I got to work (7:30am), I took a picture and posted it on twitter, having a mosquito rant. Said photo:

Not too bad. However, I'm now finding it painful to walk, so here is my leg again at 12:30pm:

? Do I need to get this checked, or should I just keep rubbing in the bite cream?

Apologies for my hideous legs!

I woudn't worry to much this is how my skin goes when the little b@astards have a go! I would go to a chemist and just ask them to recommend you a good cream and try not to itch.

It is hard to see if you have any actual swelling from the picture or if it is just red from you scratching? if it is swelling then you are having an allergic reaction to the bites and if it is still swollen after 24 hours you should see a doctors for some anti-inflammatory. If not just continue with a topical antihistamine.

To help avoid bites i would seriously recommend taking a vitamin B1 supplement. They love me and ever since I have been taking it I rarely get bitten now.

I've not touched the bites (desperately wanted to scratch earlier)

I'm using Anthisan cream - normally it is fine, I've never had a bad reaction using it.

Might pop to Boots later and see what they recommend!

    Thanks for your help ladies!

I can feel your pain! I've got around 20 mosquito bites on my legs and feet. My legs, top of my feet and ankles are swollen and its very painful! They're turning into bruises now so I guess thats maybe a sign that they're healing?! I went to the walk-in clinic last night and the nurse just said to drink plenty of water and take anti-histamines, I guess there's not much more you can do! Just dont scratch! (although its bloody difficult not to)

Me and DS suffer terribly for bites and stings. h did some research ready for our holiday to Florida. He found and article on Avons Skin S Soft oil spray.

Willing to try anything we got a few bottles. Well 10 days into our holiday and touch wood we haven't been bitten.

You should get one of those electric shock zappers that blocks the histamine receptors. They're great. I was bitten about 40 times on Honeymoon and it really helped.

Loads of people are having reactions to bites this year. I'd defo take antihistamines and maybe try hydrocortisone cream after a few days if they're not settling. They usually go down in about 3-4 days

I'm not trying to turn this into a competition but this is what my leg currently looks like after a little sod had a munch on Friday night:

Sorry pic is huge - Hitched won't let me resize it! It's actually redder than the picture is showing & is starting to get better.

I would try antihistamines to start with as I did on Saturday & do your very best not to scratch because that can cause it to become infected. Sometimes a cold pack will help with the itching, it did for me & will also help with any swelling.

Is the skin that's red hot to the touch & hotter than the rest of your leg? If it is then it's likely that it's already infected and you'll need antibiotics. I've got a weeks worth of antibiotics which aren't making me feel too great but are improving it so I need to put up with it.

Interesting what someone said about vitamin B, I take a high strength good quality vitamin B complex everyday & they still ate me!

    ? RSV2B You Win!

The bite and area surrounding are hotter than the rest of my leg, but I'm gonna see how it goes tonight. Gonna pop to the chemist on my way home tonight, but I think they'll only be able to recommend antihistamines.

Can't believe a tiny insect can do that! Hope you feel better soon!

The difficulty is that the normal reaction to injury/bites is swelling, redness, warmth, and pain; and the signs of infection are swelling, redness, warmth, pain and (sometimes) discharge!

It's tricky to decide if it's infected or not, but normally infections take a while to come (i.e. 2-3 days), and so sometimes people who rush to prescribe antibiotics if a bite's red and swollen (I think I did this today as I was 50:50 about my decision) may not be reducing healing time as the bite would be healing anyway.

The best thing is try antihistamines and if that doesn't improve it then see your GP to double check it.

There are some nasty bugs about though, they keep munching my ankles!
