Mother of the Bride outfit help

Gabbance, 7 November, 2011 at 15:48 Posted on Planning 0 12

Can anyone recommend where their lovely Mum got her outfit? My Mum is having a bit of a nightmare, having tried on basically the whole of John Lewis, and ordering anything else that wasn't in the store, trying on majority of House of Fraser and a fair bit of debenhams, she is no closer to what she wants! I have also trawled the internet but still no luck. She wanted black but now thinks it is 'a bit too sombre' so is now thinking of a silvery grey.

We are based in Hertfordshire so if anyone knows of any good shops, that would be very helpful! Also, anyone know of any brands that do petite would be a bonus, as my family are blessed with the short gene.

Your help is very much appreciated!

No, my bridal shop only do wedding dresses, although I didn't think to look at other bridal shops! I'm pretty sure she wants a dress preferably with an empire line as that suits her best. And she'll want a matching jacket as we're getting married in February.

Depends on her budget but I found MOB shops a bit too 'frumpy' for me and as soon as I mentioned I was the MOB, they automatically ushered me into a corner where prices started at £800. I got mine from a small boutique which did occasion wear such as a day at the races, cocktail dress type place and got a John Charles dress and bolero jacket. If you google John Charles, it will let you know the nearest stockists. This was mine:-

Another label which is great for Mums too is Linear (sp?) and Gina Bacconi. You could also try Monsoon and Hobbs - I saw a lovely outfit in both but they were all too long for me. As you can see, I'm only a little 'un!

My mum is 65 and is currently in love with the clothing in Jacques Vert - she intends on buying her outfit from there so might be worth your mum having a look?

Ooh just noticed Michelle's linked to one of their dresses too Smiley smile

I Can second john charles, its where my mum got her outfit from and she felt the same as RF about loads of them being frumpy. She's wearing this one, with wider straps (which come with the dress as spares):

Mine also got hers from Jacques Vert - there are pics on my report. If anything, I felt that the MOB outfits I saw advertised in wedding magazines were far too young - the models can't have been much over 35!

LK Bennett for my mum - there's alarge store just near Bond Street tube if you fancy a day out in London. The woman was lovely once she realised it was for a wedding bringing out shoes, hats, bags etc to try with it. Don't know what this season's outfits are like but the year we got my mums it was all lovely bright stuff wich was great

It sounds like your mum is having a tough time finding the perfect Mother of the Bride outfit, but don’t worry, it’s out there! If she’s considering a silvery grey, there are some beautiful options that can feel elegant yet light. Since you’ve already checked out the big department stores, I’d suggest looking at boutiques or specialist retailers that cater to occasion wear.

For petite-friendly options, L.K. Bennett has a great selection of sophisticated dresses, and they offer both elegant styles and a variety of sizes. Phase Eight and Hobbs also have beautiful dresses in silvery grey tones, and they tend to have petite ranges that may fit your mum better. If you’re willing to shop online, John Lewis also has a wide range of options, and you can filter by size to find the perfect fit.

Also, it’s worth checking out stores like BIBA or Monsoon, which often have occasion wear collections that feature shorter lengths and more flattering cuts for petite frames. To add a personal touch, use AI images for print-on-demand accessories to complement her outfit—maybe a customized clutch or a shawl that ties into the theme of the wedding.

Good luck, and I’m sure your mum will look stunning on the big day!
