Mother of the Groom Outfit: Trousers

cymruangel, 6 May, 2014 at 16:44 Posted on Planning 0 7

I'd like to access the Hitched Hive Mind on sartorial choices, if you've got the time...

The MoG wants to wear trousers to the wedding.

This is absolutely fine by me, I happen to think a smart trouser is very wedding appropriate (having worn a trouser outfit myself to a wedding in the past!) and so I'm keen to help.

The only tiny issue is she HATES to shop, hates it with a vehemence, but also won't order things online (despite being happy and au fait with Amazon). If we don't take her, there is the teeniest possibility she might turn up in just a black polo neck and slacks which, with the best will in the world, is going to make her look a bit odd in the photographs with her husband and son in morning suits... (If it were summer I'd have half a hope of coaxing her into something linen, but OH's romanticism put paid to that)

So I'm after suggestions of where we might get a smart trouser suit (or separates) that would stand up to formalwear and be suitable for 70 yr old MoG, and preferably shops or locations that might have a range in one place, so that we limit the number of shopping trips to which we have to subject her!

Thank you in advance for your inspiration!

How about John Lewis? Hundreds of brands all under one roof, you're bound to find something there! xXx

How about inviting her out for lunch In your local town ( if it's a big one with lots of clothing stores) and casually pop I to some shops nothing too mind blowing for her, just a brouse and maybe you can pick out some suit trousers and see if she likes them?

I can't stand clothes shopping, I do it once every few months, even got my dress online because of the pure hate of it. It just stresses me out, I'm much better at online shopping as I can do it from the comfort of my own home.

I would suggest a department store like Debenhams or John Lewis too - they usually have a cafe so you could stop for a coffee and cake break if things were getting stressful. Debenhams do decent jewellery for brides so you could always use that to take the focus off solely clothes shopping for her.

If she is happy to look online (but not buy), you could always help her work out which trousers and top to try on before you you to the shop - that way you'd know exactly which area to head to when you get there and have to less instore browsing time.

When my cousins have married we always had this problem with our grandma, who would have been in her 80's. She had got to the age where she didn't go shopping much. We used to book her in with the personal shopper at Debenhams. They are great because she didn't even have to wander around the shop! They put her in a private room and they go fetch stuff they think will suit her. It's stress free! All you need to do is choose who is going to go with her!

Debenhams personal shopper is definitely the way forward! I did this a few weeks ago with a voucher I was given for Christmas and it was great! The lady asked me a few questions about what I liked/didn't like, height, size etc, the disappeared for 10 mins and came back with ten dresses for me to try on. Some I needed a different size in and off she went to get it for me. After I'd picked my dresses, I told her I was going to meet OH in the pub inu new dress, so she took me downstairs and arranged for Benefit to give me a makeover!

I cannot rate this service highly enough and I plan to use it for my mum and FMIL too.

My future MIL is exactly the same. She wanted to wear a trouser suit but is no good at shopping. So I took her to a local retail park and we went to Debenhams and Next and that was all. Debenhams is ideal as they have so much in one place. We managed to sort it easily! x
