my boss doesn't believe I'm ill

flailing wildly, 9 June, 2008 at 09:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Gaaaaaaaaaah.

have been off work since Thursday, feeling super-rough, and have an appointment with the doctor this afternoon. Have kept boss informed every day about how I'm feeling and doc's appointment.

Get a phonecall this morning from boss asking me to ring in asap. So I do and get another girl in the office, who says that boss is on another line and will ring me back - but do I have a landline? Odd q, I thought, as boss normally contacts me on my mobile for everything.

So, I get a call a few minutes later from boss:

'Right, before we start, have you got a landline?'

'No, I don't.'

'So how do you get internet then?'

'Well, we have a BT line, but we don't have a phone plugged into it - saves having to split the bills.' (I flatshare)

'Right then. (Asks a very short question that could have been looked up in a minute.). bye then.'

How obvious is it that she patently thinks I'm not at home? I'm really fecking angry (or at least I would be if I had the energy to be). She can come around here and see me in my bed, looking green, with my disgusting four-day-unwashed body if she likes ?

I think I'd be taking a photo of myself at home, looking rough and sending it in, with a caption along the lines of "does this answer your question?".

How insulting. Hope you feel better soon.

She doesn't have to believe you - you can self certify for 5 days and your doctor will give you a sick note if it's necessary to extend the time off work. Unless your boss is a medical professional tell her she can stuff her snide remarks where the sun doesn't shine and to leave you alone - calling you at home while you're sick is harrassment.

Would prove nothing with me. Once I've phoned in sick, I take myself back to bed and let the answerphone pick up any calls. During the day it's mostly cold callers and wrong numbers. I figure that once my employers know I'm ill, they've really got no business ringing me and dragging me out of my sickbed to answer the phone.

    That's awful!

One of my old bosses used to go round to the house. Truly vile man, he'd turn up and if you weren't bleeding from the eyes he'd give you an hour to get in work and start your shift or get fired!

How he got away with it I'll never know.

I really feel for you, you poor thing.

my cnuting ex of a boss didn't believe i was ill either. she thought 'depression and anorexia' could be cured with a curt 'pull yourself together and eat something'. it's truly horrible and makes you feel even more rough, doesn't it?

    big ?

Thanks for the replies and thoughts (sorry I've come back late to this, I fell asleep).

It's really not on, is it? I'm super-narked but not entirely surpised. Boss has long history of doing/saying highly inappropriate things. Such as putting pressure on a colleague to give up her sunday job, oh and let's not forget telling me the ex-Mr FW was sleeping with one of her friends (which he denies to this day).

I think I'd be better off working on the checkout at Sainsbury's. Less hassle.

Pooch and FIS - god, that's terrible. What gits.

I was off sick between last christmas and new years (days which I was due to work) and co-incidentally I was sick the same period the previous year. So I was picked up on it....my boss made it clear that she did believe I was ill as she'd spoken to me on the phone but I litterally had to prove that I was ill with a Doctors note. Her we need one after 3 days so I've now said that even if I feel I've got a migraine I'll go and get a dr's note, just so it covers me for that one day. Its not worth the suspicion.

Plus it was pointed out that I had a higher than average scoring, which I found surprising as I'm never ill. But I had two years out of my total four years service where I was having to take the odd day off due to stomach bugs, migraines etc but other than that I'm very well. TBH i think it was more that another colleague was taking the pi$$ at the time so everyone was under suspicion but not nice anyway.

Thanks for your reply. I went to the doctor's this afternoon and (as I suspected) my doc said that NHS practice is for patients to self-cert for up to five working days, so he told me I didn't need a doctor's note. What he did do was give me a letter to give to my boss which says that 'they don't feel that it is fair to ask patients to pay for a doctor's note for periods of sickness under this period as it's not required by law, so if you require a certificate, they'd be happy to provide one to the company at the current fee of £12' (or words to that effect).

I've got to take pills for 30 days to help calm the bloating and digestive problems, and I also have to take an asthma test for two weeks - oh, and start a dairy free diet to see if that helps. Yep, really enjoying my time off, thanks boss.

I have a sneaking suspicion that she thinks that the ex-ish Mr FW and I have both taken the day off today to live it up in some seedy hotel or other (he's a business client of ours, so she would be in contact with the firm and know he's not in work either.). As it happens, he's been at his parents supporting them through his grandmother's funeral. The thought that she's suspecting we're 'playing hookie' whilst this is going on really disgusts me.

Thats crap! I was off last summer with a torn ligiment in my ankle. My boss sounded like she thought it was just a sprain, so i actually took a photo and emailed it to her saying it looks just as bad as it feels. She showed it to one of my medical colleagues who concurred it definitely looked like a torn ligiment. It was rubbish that i had to go that far though.

    Bum to your boss!
