My cat needs a tummy tuck

Peaches, 8 July, 2008 at 15:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Seriously - he has the most droppy stomach I've ever seen on a cat!

He is a year old now, just over. He is huge! Weighs about a stone. But he's not fat. So why does he have all this loose, hanging skin under his belly?

If he were older and had been a really fat cat, then lost weight, I could understand it (having been in that position myself!), but we got him when he was 10 months old, and he wasn't fat then, so surely it's just part of him?

But why? Do other cats have it?

We swear he is a cross between a puma and a dog. Puma for size. Dog because he fetches thrown balls. Begs for food. Barks at birds. Loves being patted like a dog. Hilarious!

Florence has had this from a young age too, it makes her look much older. But she's overweight and constantly on a diet (she doesn't self regulate).

Is this the one you rescued / took in as a stray? That was you, wasn't it?

If so, then it could just be from the rapid improvement in his food etc. It happened to our Hollycat when we first got her - I made Mr Boop take her back to Battersea to check she wasn't pregnant because she developed this huge stomach and flappy belly. It was purely because she was stressed in Battersea - poor love was there 6 months - and didn't eat much. Once she relaxed with us all the weight went on her stomach. it's much more even these days.

Yes Boop, that was me! Well remembered ?

Thing is, he had this loose skin when we got him, so it's not something that's happened since he came here. Although he is a completely different cat now in terms of being content and settled, I don't think he has eating issues. He eats like a horse, but that's because he is so big anyway (he poos like one too!)

He's just got this awfully hangy skin which makes him look, well, saggy for want of a better word. I've not seen it before on other cats, so it's alien to me. Just needed to know he was kinda 'normal' I guess.

Either that or I'm taking cosmetic surgery a tad too far!!!

Jam has the same problem. She's very small in staute and puts on weight very easily (with the belly). Now we've sorted her diet (and she seems to not be eating so much elsewhere), she still has a little hanging belly.

Jam! What a great name! I called Tex 'Marmite' once - and then regretted calling him Tex (short for Texas) as Marmite was so fitting (with him being all-black)!

Anyway .. back to his stomach. It's not fat, just loose skin. And he exercises plenty! I have him running up and down the stairs like a lunatic chasing his Da Bird https://www.thecatconnection.com/page/TCC/PROD/TYS-WAND/TYS-4990?gclid=CKTOq8LDsJQCFSMYagodrQxWuA and the latest toy - a red laser light which he goes nuts for! If I'm not careful, he ends up out of breath and panting!!

As for the cosmetic surgery .. if anyone round here is getting a tummy tuck, it's me first! ?

I know girl cats have a tendency to get like that after being neutered but never really known it in a male.

I didn't know that, that would probably explain Florence then.

Our two girls Pinot and Pernod have flappy bellies and neither are or have been fat, I think with them its post neutering. They look like theyve had lotsa kitties, stretched their bellies and its not gone back. Even though neither of them have had a litter.

Guinness our boy has increased his weight since we took him in and actually has some muscle now instead of being skin and bones. He is off for the chop on Friday, so I will keep an eye on his under carriage afterwards to see if his toned firm 6 pack becomes floppy and saggy!

Its interesting Peaches as Ive not come across a male cat with a flappy belly, its always been girls.

My Mum's male cat has a very saggy belly that swings from side to side when he walks.

Hmmm .. should my boy cat be a girl I wonder?

Trying to get a photo to show you, but iPhoto is playing silly buggers. And I really should be somewhere else right now! ?

That's Tex! Only his isn't a beer gut - just loose, hanging skin which is actually quite gross when he lies on his side! Especially as he has bald nipples which stand out against his black fur (his skin isn't black, so it doesn't blend in)

I'm beginning to sound a little too American fretting over my cat's imperfections, aren't I!

Time to go I think lol. Before I pick up the phone to the Kitty Kosmetic-surgery Kompany !
