My engagement ring is miles too big! Any advice?

Cordelia, 21 July, 2008 at 16:25 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hello, and forgive any faux pas - I'm new here as I got engaged on 5th July.

My fiance proposed with the most stunning ring, an antique left to him by his grandmother. I adore it and it means a great deal to have a family heirloom. BUT! My fingers are tiny and it's six and a half sizes too big for me! It's platinum, with a 1ct diamond in the centre, surrounded by three tiny diamonds on each side, a bit like this:

***O***

...if you see what I mean!

We went to Hatton Garden at the weekend to ask for advice and were told everything, from "No way, it's impossible to resize because the small diamonds will pop out", to "Yes we could do it, but it's a tricky job and it would take a while and cost a lot", to "Yes, we'll do it in an hour - don't worry if the diamonds come out, we'll just put them back in for £4 each".

I have no idea what to do. Has anyone had a similar problem and, if so, how did you deal with it?

Many thanks for any advice/ suggestions!

my suggestion would be... to have the ring re-made in the same style....... using the diamonds again?? maybe that wouldnt be cost efficient. A really good jeweller - not a high street one but an actual 'sit-in-studio-and-make' jeweller should be able to amend the size no problem....

Hello and welcome to hitched, cordelia ?

i had to have my e-ring re-sized recently - it slipped off while i was putting away some washing (cue subsequent threats of divorce etc etc). it's a emerald cut diamond with two baguettes either side, so a bit more complicated to resize than, say, solitaires. mind you, i only needed it re-sized from N to L and a half so not much at all. that cost me £60 through swag (jewellery shop at bluewater).

yours sounds like a much more complicated issue - think you have done the right thing in taking it to hatton garden. the decision is yours about which risk you are happiest living with - do you risk the smaller diamonds popping out and being re-done while having it re-sized, or do you run the risk of it falling off and you losing the rink cos it's too big?

sorry, know this isn't probably much help.

Teehee's idea of having a new ring made in the same design is a good one, maybe using the initial metal as well as the stones?

If not that then I would go wth your gut reaction, choose a company you are trusting of and decide from there.

Personaly I would try having it sized as there doesn't seem to be any way you can wear it as it is. Insure it first and then choose a jeweller to resize it. Then if they all pop out I'd have a copy ring made with the same metal and jewels.

<aside> It sounds gorgeous! Any photos?! <aside>

    Welcome to hitched xx

Thanks for the advice and ideas - very kind.

I wouldn't really be keen to get it completely remade, as it's very valuable and it has such history. I am certainly planning to get it done on Hatton Garden as there was one very well reputed bespoke jeweller who looked at it and suggested we come back to meet with their expert person. They weren't 100% certain what to do without speaking to him.

It's far too big to leave it as it is, it will definitely come off - at the moment it's practically glued to my hand with very strong tape! ;-)

Just wondering if it is actually possible to resize a ring of such shape/ design and if so, what's the best way of doing so.

Your ring is a bit similiar to mine and all they would need to do, I imagine, is take out a section from the band thats 'under' your finger......bend the ring round slightly, fill the gap... and voila!

thats my non-expert opinion of course.. Smiley smile

Teehee - that's what I thought, but because it is so much bigger than my finger, the extent to which it'd have to be bent might force the little diamonds out.

I love it so much - just want it to fit!

Hi, my rin is very similar with one centre diamond and 9 little diamonds down each shoulder.

the jeweller i bought it from told me that it can never be altered as it means the shoulder diamonds will become unstable and when making smaller the centre diamond gets squeezed - if you know what i mean.

i put on 4 stone when i was pregnant so couldn't wear my ring until baby was 3 months old and i wanted to get it made a size bigger. Went to one of the most reputable jewellers in Edinburgh and it wasn't a problem for them, but went back to jeweller purchased from and it was a big no no. Ended up buying wedding ring in same size and just made sure i lost the weight.

my only suggestion is like before: have it remade, using the diamonds and platinum. It will not be cheap (i've enquired about mine) but if its that sentimental its worth it. Then all the history is there in the "new" ring.

alternative; have a really frank discussion with your H2B. You can't lose the ring and he needs to know your concerns and consider getting a new ring.

My mum had a similar prob to yours, she didn't want to damage the ring or risk loosing it so she had a little bar put inside it, so the actual ring was still the same but the bar sort of crossed inside the circle so there was a smaller space for her finger, then a small gap underneath (not sure if I'm explaining it well!)

Not sure if this would work for you as it's so much different to your finger size, but it's the only thing I can think of if it's gonna be hard to re-size.

    Cordelia,

I had my ring custom made in Greenwich at Johnny Rockets and I can't recommend my them enough! They have an on site workshop that's fully equiped to do everything you could possibly need to do to a ring (or a jewel encrusted guitar believe it or not!). A few of my friends have gone there recently to get their rings designed and all agreed that it was excellent service plus Johnny and Niall are really lovely guys. Pretty sure it's slightly less expensive than some Hatton Gardens places too.

When I first got my ring, it was the wrong size. Because it's a half eternity, it's generally a bit difficult to resize, but they managed it in an hour for me! If you're in SE London at any stage, do go in and have a chat with them.

Just an update and a recommendation for anyone with a similar problem.

After carefully considering our options, we decided to get a more reliable opinion than that received in Hatton Garden, so phoned Asprey in New Bond Street. They don't offer a resizing service on jewellery not bought from them, but recommended Bentley and Skinner, also in New Bond Street. When I phoned, they told me they were the jewellers who made Damien Hirst's diamond skull - so I figured my job would be a simple one for them!

Went to see them on Saturday and they were FANTASTIC. The man we spoke to was a consummate professional, looked carefully at the ring, told us a lot about it, and reassured us that it was perfectly possible to resize, because, as the part holding the diamonds is the same size as my wee finger, just the shank would need to be resized. They are also going to resize, value and certificate it, rhodium plate it and polish it, all for £175, in one week!

I am delighted and couldn't recommend them highly enough.
    Yay.

Oh gosh, I am SOOO excited about getting it back - sparkly and shiny and perfect-fit.

We're having dinner with my parents and his on Saturday (first time they've met - EEEK!) so I'm hoping I'll have it for then!

Any advice on how to ensure the Bride's Family v. Groom's Family dinner goes well would be gratefully accepted! (This is what my fiance is calling it - I think they'll get on really well!)

Thanks for your help and concern, ladies.
