My feet are horrible. Please can you recommend something to help?

? I was going to go anon for this but I thought people might laugh as it probably sounds really pathetic.

It's my feet. They've never been the world's nicest feet but they've always been pretty presentable, I could wear sandals/flip flops etc without them looking hideous.

But it's all changed. Not only are they now a size bigger than they were (I was a 7, I woke up one day when I was about 7 months pregnant and couldn't get on any shoes and now they're an 8, and haven't shrunk back nearly 6 months after giving birth) which was bad enough but now they just look terrible too. I have started to go swimming a couple of times a week at the public pool as we had to cancel our gym membership and I can only think that maybe cos of the amount of kids that go there I've picked up some kind of bug.

My toenails are all thick and yellow looking, the skin on the underside of the toes is all shiney and hard, between the toes is all cut and itchy, and weeping and sore. My H said it might be athletes' foot and so I bought Lamasil spray but it hasn't really helped. I had an infection on the big toe and it was really painful and all pus-sy and antibiotics have cleared it up but it still looks awfully red. I have small lumps on one of my toes which I fear might be verrucas ? it's all just horrible. I feel really quite upset about it ?

Anyway. Can anyone recommend things that could help? As I said I tried the Lamasil spray but didn't find it really helped. I can't afford to go and see a chiropodist (aside from the fact I have 2 small children so it's not really practical anyway as I'd need to trail them with me). Are there any creams etc that anyone can recommend? And assuming it's been caused or made worse by the swimming, can you still get those wee plasticky socks some people used to wear swimming?

?

? it sounds like you have a fungal infection on your toenails - they are a bugger to shift!!! But I'd definitely recommend going to see your GP - you can get over the counter stuff but it's £20 a go and takes months and months to get rid of so it's much better to get something on prescription ?

(can you tell I'm speaking from experience here? ?)

Oh poor you - I reckon you need to go to your GP - sounds like a fungal infection. You should get free treatment through your GP rather than pay to go private to see a chiropodists.

I'd suggest staying away from the pool until it's cleared up though, just so it doesn';t get any worse from being in the water and to avoide any cross-infection.

I thought this post was going to be a chance to do my JML Ped-Egg evangelism. Maybe when the infection has cleared up you could treat yourself. best thing ever from turning hard parmesan rind heels into normal looking feet again.

I would second (or third) going to the GP as it sounds like a fungal infection from the sound of the toenails but the weepy sore bits between the toes sounds like athletes foot. Given that you suspect verrucas as well you probably need a couple of different treatments and the GP would be the best to advise.

You could speak to a pharmacist if it's easier, they usually have a private room to see you in.

ETA the GP would be better though as it will be cheaper and probably able to give you stronger stuff.

? guys. Have been reluctant to go to the GP as I've been there so much, either for myself or for my children, in the past few months, I am sure they must think Oh FFS her again when they see my name pop up on their patient lists ? but it sounds like that might be the best option esp as I get my prescriptions free atm.

I know it's a really silly thing to get down about, but I've never had grotty feet before and it's yucky. Ah well, they might be enormous, they might look grotty, but I have it on good authority (well my H) that at least they don't pong [watery smile]

    Aww poor Roob ?

Please do try and go and see your docs so they can give you something to help shift any lurking fungal infections, once that's cleared up i'm sure it's going to help you feel as though getting you're on top on things foot wise again. It's only April now so i'm sure by the time our summer eventually comes round things will be much improved and you can get busy with the lovely nail varnish, wear your summer shoes and be proud ?
