My guinea pig just gave birth! Updated with more pics

Zo, 4 August, 2008 at 20:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

My guinea pig Tufty just had her babies! She started making funny squeeks so we dashed over in time to see her give birth to the first baby. She was scared and unsure about what to do so we had to break the bag for her so that the baby could breathe, but after that she was a star, she gave birth to 4 babies in total and has cleaned them all up nicely and didnt need any further help. She's so far passed 3 of the placentas, so one more to go.

Just sorting out some pics of them as the births were happening.

Edit

Have added the pics, the divider in the cage is to keep the male away while she gave birth etc (he had his operation today to remove his bits as well so he's recouperating)

UPDATE here are the original pics and a few more https://www.photobox.co.uk/album/59359591

Is this your first litter? If so, you'll be amazed at how quickly they'll be up and walking about and eating proper food.

We did know she was pregnant, its how we found out that they weren't both girls like we thought! It is out first litter, its amazing, they are born with hair and their eyes open and they are already starting to walk!

Aw, so cute. My mum bred guinea pigs for many years (still has the occasional litter) and they are such sweet things. Like little furry sausages running around the cage.

I think you can just leave them and the mum will clean up.

It sounds like she's figured out what to do with the babies then - she'll most likely get round to the rest of the clean up later.

They are lovely, the are all dry now and walking about. I'll get some more pictures tomorrow.

We keep ours in the living room in an indoor cage that sits on top on a cheap ikea coffee table.

    How lovely! Congratulations!

Our guinea pig had two litters and they were so sweet!

We had them in a cardboard box indoors and the sides were low enough for mum to get out (this wasnt intentional) but it was okay as sometimes I think she did need a break!

As the babies got bigger they too would climb out of the box and follow her in a long line around the room sqeaking! They followed exactly where she went, even if she was right behind the one at the back!
