'Naked' wedding Cake

*2014bride*, 20 February, 2013 at 20:20 Posted on Planning 0 21

Hi

I have been researching ideas for my wedding cake and have come across quite a few 'naked' wedding cakes.

I like the idea of these as I personally am not a big fan of icing. I just wondered if anyone has any experience of these, or if anyone has an opinion on them? ?

Never seen a 'naked' cake but that one looks delicious.

When I opened this thread, I was expecting a picture of a lump of fruitcake chucked on a platter.

    I LOVE naked cakes!

Might ask SIL to make one for the cake table Smiley smile

I think they are beautiful and much prefer them. I don't like fruit cake or icing. We had a traditionally decorated sponge cake simply because cake wasn't a priority to us and we had it done cheap, but if I were to do it all again, I'd go naked!

Love the cake, although I feel there are implications on how long it can be left out before the quality is affected when compared to an iced cake.

I'm having one Smiley smile. Nice an easy to make myself, with cream and fresh berries, and liberally dusted with icing sugar. Don't 'do' formal icing

    Really liking that one ?

    This ^^^

We wanted one but not practical in our marquee. Would have had to put it out just for cutting!

I wanted something that could be on show all day!

Thank you for the replies, I really like the idea of them and even starting to like the look of them in comparison to the 'traditional' wedding cake.

But the point about the cake being left out makes me wonder... so many decisions!! ?

We're hoping to go the naked cake route as well - don't like the heavy icing on a more traditional cake, so this seems perfect! Just trying to find somewhere near us who makes them! Hadn't thought about it not being able to be left out all day, but I think this is something we'd deal with as we just want a cake that we love!

Yummy. We're definitely having one. Plus a few fruity bits round the sides. Our wedding is outside/marquee too so no idea how it's going to keep, think we might just have to bring it out a few minutes before eating, but I'm not too bothered about that.

That one looks beautiful. In general, though, I'm all about the icing - I even steal H's! I'd be quite happy as a guest with a cake like the one in that picture though.

Gutted, I scanned the title and read Naked wedding, the cake aspect is quite disappointing after thinking you were having a naked wedding.

I wanted a tiered victoria sponge for ours. My mum convinced me that it would eb too much of a faff so we had baked cheesecake insead (which was still a faff for her!)

agree it would need to be baked fresh and kept in tuppaware until the last min!

    Does look delicious though!

    Hi,

Just wondered, those of you who said you have ordered them where have you got them from I can hardly find any places that do them Smiley sad we really want one as neither of us are big fans of icing. We are getting married in North Yorkshire and would be grateful for any recommendations.

    Thanks Smiley smile

I don't like traditional wedding cake, so we had a tiny fruitcake with fondant icing, to match the cupcakes underneath. Then we had a cake table with loads of different cakes, all homemade.

I can't see the picture Smiley sad

We are having one! In terms of where to get them just ask any normal wedding cake maker - all the ones I've emailed have said they would do it!

Thanks, thought it may have been a silly question but am very new to all this wedding planning stuff. Good to know that you just emailed regular cake suppliers as all the websites I've looked at have just shown the classic fondant covered cakes. Are any of you planning to make your own naked wedding cake? I bake quite a lot but just worry about taking on too many DIY projects that require last minute focus.

My only concern about you taking the task on yourself is when you'd have to do it. Although you can freeze sponge you would have to decorate really close to the actual wedding in order for it tobe fresh.

My friend is having a naked cake, it wouldn't be for me though as I love icing!

I'm hoping for a naked cake too. I despise icing ?

The H2B will only eat chocolate cake so our cake will be naked, vegan chocolate! exciting.
