Name change after wedding - middle names!

RomanticIvoryCars939, 2 September, 2017 at 19:03 Posted on Planning 0 1

Hi,

Hopefully somebody will be able to help me with this. After I get married i plan to take on my husband's surname, however I have numerous middle names which I want to drop after the wedding so I'll just have my first name and my husband's surname. Does anyone know if I'll need to a deed poll for this? Or will I be able to change it straight on my marriage certificate? I'm just thinking for my passport for my honeymoon. I'm wanting to book my flights now and I have no idea what name to put for them.

Thanks in advance!

I believe you will need deed poll to remove your middle names but not for the surname change. Best option would be to travel in your maiden name. Alternatively you could change your passport surname before the wedding but i dont think you can just remove your middle names from your passport without deed poll.

In the UK, your marriage certificate will only allow you to change your surname to your husband’s, but it won’t let you drop or alter your middle names – for that you would need to complete a deed poll to officially remove them, otherwise your full legal name (including all middle names) will remain the same on documents like your passport; when booking flights for your honeymoon, it’s safest to use the name exactly as it appears on your current passport to avoid travel issues, and then you can update everything later with a deed poll if you still want to simplify your name, a bit like how some people take a teste de pureté ado just to clarify where they stand before making a final choice.
