New kettle and the water tastes funny.......

allymc, 20 December, 2008 at 14:48 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

.........is it because I bought a cheap one? Or is this something that will settle down over the next couple of days? The 'blurb' says to boil and rinse the kettle at least twice before using it. It's been boiled at least 10 or 12 times now and it still tastes funny [:'(] WWYD?

    Does it taste of TCP?

Does the water taste ok from the tap?

Try boiling it in a pyrex container in the microwave, does it still taste ok?

If its yes its your kettle. The chlorine in the water reacts with the plastic in the kettle and produces trichlorophenols (TCP). Do you live in a hard water area? Once the scale builds up on the kettle it'll stop. In the meantime get rid of the chlorine by leaving a jug of water in the fridge for a few hours and then boil this water.

Thanks Gingey Wife. I guess the only way I can describe the taste is that it's rather plasticy. I guess it has to be the kettle as H hasn't complained about his squash tasting funny. I'm assuming the TCPs aren't harmful? Will try leaving some water in the fridge as you've suggested ?
