New Venue needed in newcastle / Coast

dizzydaisys, 2 June, 2011 at 09:53 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hi everybody,

was originally planning my wedding for december 2011 at otterburn hall in northumberland. i have since found out i am pregnant and are changing the date to april 2012. now i am not sure i can justify the price of a country house wedding and am looking for other venues. i do not want to get married in a church but would still like somewhere nice and romantic for the ceremony and then quite open about reception - either small and intimate or as original, 70 guests. i do not want to pay silly prices though. does anyone have any good ideas? we live on the coast so whitley bay tynemouth would be ideal, or a bit further a field would be fine too.

    Hiya,

    Congrat's on the pregnancy!

I'm not far from you and am still planning and searching for venues. Mine's not till 2013 though so i'm not panicking yet! I looked at Otterburn Hall - loved their marquee but it's a bit too far for us as we're getting married at a church near ours in Benton and then would have to ferry guests across which works out quite pricey!

So, for you guys if you still fancy the country house feel but would like it a bit closer for travel then what about Newcastle Mansion House in Jesmond? Think it's quite a decent price budget-wise - seem to get a lot for your money. Your numbers would fit but I have a few too many...

or if you want something grand and fancy but are happy with more of a function suite than an exclusive venue to yourselves then there's The Assembly Rooms in Newcastle. Easy to get to as it's just up from Central Station, and again it will come in cheaper than a country house wedding.

Another one that i've seen the website for but never actually visited (so not sure how nice it would be in 'real life') is Backworth Hall. Ideal location from you, lovely grounds, and traditional old building from the outside so lovely for photos. Just not quite sure what the inside is like as I can't find any photos of the rooms. Might be worth a look tho. It's only £300 for venue hire (I rang and spoke to them but never got round to visit) so think it would be cheaper than most other options but still pretty and romantic.

Ooooo and one other thought if you want something a bit different... Crusoe's on the beach at Tynemouth is a little cafe that opens right onto the sand! By day it's a cafe but they hire it for functions at night. If you're having a june wedding (same as me!) and fingers crossed it's sunny then have a beach party!!

    Hope that helps!!

I love the idea of Crusoes but i just think £25 a head for evening function is too much. I think mansion house works out more expensive than otterburn but will definately look into backworth hall and assembly rooms.

We covered a wedding at Backworth Hall last year and the grounds are nice but it's pretty basic inside. Our bride used to work as a florist, so was able to make the room look really nice, yet stay within a reasonable budget. I don't think the food they do is particularly fancy, but they may let you bring an outside caterer in if you wanted. If you want to have a look at their photos they're here - https://simonhudspeth.co.uk/GillianandStephen/gallery.htm

Beamish Hall is a fantastic venue, and as somebody else suggested The Sage is definitely worth looking at if you want something a bit different.

    Best of luck finding somewhere

    Hello Fellow Newcastle Brides!!

Have you thought about "As You Like It" in Jesmond? It's gorgeous and quite reasonably priced from what I remember, They are licensed for civil ceremonies too Smiley smile

I really really liked it but as i'm not originally from up here we wanted somewhere with onsite accomodation so we decided to look at hotels and have picked (although not booked yet... even though I'm itching to!) Longhirst Hall in Morpeth.

Would be lovely to keep in touch with any Newcastle brides Smiley smile

Oh there's also the discovery museum in town, and the Hancock (or whatever it's called these days!) which are both different venues but quite reasonably priced.

Yay - love to hear from Newcastle brides!! Smiley smile

We're getting married at Horton Grange which is a bit pricey but we're only having 45 guests so not too bad for us. Memories from when we were looking though... As You Like It is definitely reasonable and The Biscuit Factory in town was reasonable although we didn't end up ging to see it. Longhirst was reasonable until they revised their prices to a minimum spend which didn't suit us cos of the low numbers we're having. I seem to remember Linden Hall weren't too bad either although we were put off cos they said since we're the small wedding we'd have to have our reception in the restaurant while the 'main' wedding went on in the hall!

Thanks everyone for all your ideas. i am going to look at whitley bay lighthouse for ceremony / day reception. it is £300 to hire and you get own caterers in which am sure would be cheaper than any hotel. it holds 50max so will be having a more intimate do than originally planned. then onto somewhere else afterwards, lots of options for that! any one been to whitley bay lighthouse for a wedding?
