Nits again!!!!!!!!!!! AAAHHH...Rant

muffins, 10 December, 2008 at 20:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

I am so fed up of de-nitting my daughters hair? I treat it and spend hours nit combing, with a torch as it makes any nits/lice show up more clearly. She is clear 100% and I nit comb every day for a week then retreat, so basically a two week cycle. Then a week later she gets them again?. I check daily, use tea tree shampoo and nit repelant spray, her hair is french platted with no fringe. The school have told me that there is a problem in her year group and someone is not treating. It costs a fortune, as she has thick long hair which takes a whole bottle (for two applications) at £11 a time, so £22 a fortnight and today is the third time she's had them this term so its £66 to date on her alone, I have had to be treated as she passed it onto me so thats more money!

I have tried the tea tree and olive oil and combing through daily but it does not effectively remove all nits (also have a nitty gritty comb which is excellent but not 100%) and no one would play with her at school as her hair was so greasy it was obvious she had nits!!

Today I have bought a hair type band that is like a head scarf, I know the head teacher will moan that it is not 'school colours' but I have to try protecting her from this endless infection of nits!!!

Fed up!

I feel your pain, I'm a teacher and have had them a couple of times from the kids, it's horrid and makes you feel like such a leper!

I have found Nice'nClear to be very effective - it's natural rather than chemical stuff and I actually find it works better because head lice are now resistant to so many of the chemicals (this may especially be the problem if you're having to use it on such a regular basis). Plus, being natural, it's also a lot cheaper - about £5 I think, and also contains enough doses for a good course of treatments (I have very long thick hair but the dosage they suggest is enough).

I also think 'they' recommend combing & treating every other day for the first week and then a couple more times the following week - possibly eggs are still remaining by the end of the first week and that's why they're coming back so quickly as well?

Good luck with it, it really is horrid - your poor daughter.

I feel your pain. My daughter was forever getting them and like you I was spending a fortune on stuff. She had been clear now since September, why? becauee IK cut her lovely long waist length hair to a short bob. Even though I used to tie her hair up everyday it didn;t seem to make a difference so I had it all cut off. My daughger cried when she walked out of hte hairdressers, so I placified her by buying her lots of nice alice bands from Monsoon. At the end of t he day it's only hair and will grow back, the short style actually suits (IMO) and I now don;t need to worry about nits anymore. double bonus.

Isn't head lice stuff free on prescription for children?

When my daughter kept getting it - she has mega thick (and was very long) hair - I got a bit worried about using all those chemicals on her head so often, so I just bought a load of cheap conditioner, piled it on every night while she was in the bath, then combed her hair with a comb-a-way nit comb. It really does the trick. I used to do it every night for two weeks, then after that, every time she had a bath (every other night normally) The teeth on the comb are much longer than any other nit-comb I'd seen which made it much easier in her hair.

I still have it now and just use it like a normal comb if I feel any itchiness. (I work in a school) I really do recommend it.
