No idea what to buy my nan for her 80th birthday - help please?

KB3, 3 September, 2008 at 13:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

It's my nana's 80th birthday next month and I have no idea what to buy her. Usually it's slippers, a bottle of Badedas bubble bath, or some chocolates. However 80 years old is pretty special so I want to get her something nice, but I'm stumped.

Whilst I love her to bits, sheis as crazy as crazy can be, and can be a little miserable and bitter about life.

She is a huge fan of Terry Wogan & Derek Jamieson (is he still alive?), plays bingo on a daily basis, loves anything sweet, dotes on her grandchildren, and loves TV. She doesn't have a garden but likes indoor flowering plants, hates cooking, and generally keeps herself to herself.

Any ideas? ? <------------ nervous laugh. Budget would be up to £100 although she'd kill me for spending that much money. She loves a bargain does nana and is a regular at the reduced aisle of Sainsburys.

Afternoon tea at a local posh hotel or if your near London Ritz or Claridges.

My Nana is now 95 & very active. Her 80th she was on the Great Wall in China.

When MrNeo's nan turned 90 we bought her a huge bouquet of 90 roses. She has everything she needs anyway and she loved it.

Whilst that is a lovely idea, she hates the thought of people fussing. She won't come to iours for dinner as it's too much fuss, we really have to force her! She also worked in catering all of her life, once she gave up running a pub, she still waitresses at afternoon teas for family run catering events so it wouldb't really be a treat for her.

Now I've said that I bet a family member takes her!

How about painting something for her at a local china painting studio? My great-auntie loved her mug and I got her some posh tea to go with it.

If she likes sweet stuff, a hamper of her favorite cakes and biscuits? Or a 'name a rose' gift set where you get to name a new strain of roses...

MD nice idea but really not my thing at all. She does love tea though, I bought her some F&M stuff at Christmas she has been raving about.

LoobyG, I like the hamper idea. I also like the flower idea from Neo. I think I might get her yet another framed picture, but this time, me & mrkb plus kids rather than just kids. A mini hamper and 80 stem bouquet (depending on the cost!)

we never actually saw it as she lives back in Belgium and it was impossible for us to make the trip for her birthday due to work. We asked his dad to take a picture of it but he didn't. She didn't have a vase to fit them all though so it was divided over her whole living room.

If she like likes her tv, how about a freeview box if she doesn't have one or Sky.

Alternatively, does she have a DVD player - if not perhaps a DVD player and a selection of films?

If she is anything like my 77 year old Mum, those presents could be more trouble then they are worth! We're forever having to play tech-support on Mum's gadgetry as she doesn't understand it!!

LOL - I know what you mean - my 10 year old knows how to operate my mobile phone better than I do!

A lot of DVD players now are so cheap and basic and do the job well - just press one button to open the DVD holder and another to play the DVD!

You're welcome. Just a word of advice though - if you do order from them, arrange the delivery for one day BEFORE you want it to arrive. Between the company & Parcel Force they have been late twice. Although for both parcels I arranged the delivery the day before the birthdays and they arrived smack on time (as far as the receiver was concerned!). For example, it's my friend's birthday today but I arranged for his present to be delivered yesterday. 'God' received it today (see other post) which is the right day, but not IYSWIM! ?

Ha ha .. wrong sex, but this just landed in my inbox! ....

    80th Birthday Present
On my 80th birthday, I got a gift certificate from my wife. The certificate paid for a visit to a medicine man living on a nearby reservation who was rumored to have a wonderful cure for erectile dysfunction.
After being persuaded, I drove to the reservation, handed my ticket to the medicine man and wondered what I was in for.
The old man slowly, methodically produced a potion, handed it to me, and with a grip on my shoulder, warned, "This is powerful medicine and it must be respected. You take only a teaspoonful and then say '1-2-3. 'When you do that, you will become more manly than you have ever been in your life and you can perform as long as you want."
I was encouraged. As he walked away, I turned and asked, "How do I stop the medicine from working? " "Your partner must say '1-2-3-4,' he responded. "But when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next full moon."
I was eager to see if it worked. I went home, showered, shaved, took a spoonful of the medicine, and then invited my wife to join me in the bedroom. When she came in, I took off my clothes and said, "1-2-3!" Immediately, I was the manliest of men. My wife was excited and began throwing off her clothes. And then she asked, "What was the 1-2-3 for?"
And that, boys and girls, this is why we should never end our sentences with a preposition!!!!!

My Nan was 80 in March for which i got her Euros for her holiday; my cousin theough bought her a crystal decanter with glasses for her to use - specifically for water as opposed to alcohol - i am sure she uses it for both. It was a lovely gift.
