No tables on an evening?????

Jade1990, 21 October, 2015 at 10:51 Posted on Planning 0 21

The venue which I have totally fell in love with and compares to no other venue I have seen dropped a bit of a bombshell when I asked a few questions regarding the evening set up.

To transition from the meal to the evening party (in another room) they advised that they begin to clear away tables to encourage guests to move into the next room, which seems pretty reasonable.

However - I was then advised that in the room where the evening party will be held, there will be no tables and only chairs around the outside of the room.

Below is a picture of the room where the evening party will be held (as well as the ceremony), and as the venue is new this year there are no images that I can find of the evening layout so that I can see how it would work.

They are happy to have a few tables in the bar area for people, but I'm worried that people would rather sit at a table. We have 150 guests on the evening so I understand it would be too cramped to have the room full of tables.

Positives are it gets people up dancing and mingling, when sometimes people are a bit more reserved at the beginning of the night.

Has anyone had any experience of this set up before, and how did you and your guests find it?

I've never been to a wedding where there were no tables in the evening. At my brothers wedding we went to the bar/garden after the service while the marriage room was set up for the wedding meal and in the evening they just removed all cloths etc and added tea lights to the tables. What evening food are you providing and how do people eat and put their drink etc.

I personally think people who are not dancing will either go in the bar to grab a seat or pull chairs into little groups to chat.

No I havent either, although I have a friend who hires wedding items who said that its quite common and she has worked a few where this has happened. The wedding breakfast is in another room, which is where the bar is and where there will be a few tables left out.

The evening food is just pork and apple/hot roast beef sandwiches which they advised will be taken to guests rather than guests helping themselves at a buffet type of thing. They said they do it this way to encourage people to stay on the dancefloor.

Drinks situation is what I was unsure of - but they advised that it would be just as if you were on a night out dancing with your drink in hand. There will be chairs around the edge of the room for people to sit should they wish.

Its difficult because unless I gatecrashed someones wedding there I'm not sure I could picture how it would work haha and I dont think thats an option.

I went to a wedding that was similar to this and i wasn't a fan, at first!!! It was in a hotel, and the bar and tables were in one room, and the DJ and dance floor was in another room. At first people tended to hang around the bar and I felt the DJ area was a bit redundant but after a while everyone filtered into the DJ room and it worked really well. There was loads of room for dancing, and odd chairs to sit on when you felt a little weary!

It is a little hard to I imagine but if you love the venue I'm sure it will work xxx

A few tables at the bar area should work fine. Presumably the evening food is finger food which people can eat standing up (a la cocktail party style)? Or people can sit down with a plate on their lap?

I don't see it as being a huge issue but maybe you should get them to specify/confirm how many tables there will be and how many people this will seat, and how may seats in the other room.

    HTH.

It sounds little odd - a bit like a school disco set up!

But it could encourage people to use the dancefloor. It could also force them...

Is there no way you could have a few tables in a corner space of the room, for people who don't want to dance but want to be in the same room as the music, to watch people having a dance?

Also, how about the tall tables? For people to put their drinks on? Drinks get spilled when they're held constantly!

The evening food is hot meat sandwiches which will be served to guests by the waiting staff rather than a buffet. They did say they could put a few smaller tables in for people so maybe I would go with that option. I know the oldies wont want to be in with all the noise so they will probably have the tables in the bar area.

Yes tall tables would be a good idea, but they dont offer them Smiley sad

They did say they could put a few tables in the corner but I didnt know if that would make the area too cramped.

There isnt really anywhere that I like venue-wise so a different venue isnt really an option. Im fussy and there isnt alot of choice where I live, so I suppose I would just have to make it work.

    Hi

I know what you mean as our venue had a similar set up for the evening with DJ in one room and bar in another room.

The bar area had just 4 tables and the DJ room had just 2 tables but both had ample seating.

You'll be surprised, as most people stand and chat or will be dancing and going from one place to another. We found that is was only the few elderly relatives that stayed in one place most of the time.

I think it will be absolutely fine with just a few tables. No need to worry at all.

You have found your ideal venue so don't let this put you off ?

I am in the same boat as you! Our venue is too small to have big tables and enough room for dancing etc...we are setting the tables up for our day guests to sit and have a cream tea and then in the evening the tables will be put away and the chairs put around the edge of the room with some smaller tables for drinks etc...I think it will be ok. We are having quite an Informal day with buffet/hog roast in the evening. The bar is also in a different room so i assume guests will be wandering from room to room and mingling rather then sitting round a table all night...?!

I think it will be fine! I went to a wedding recently that was in a pub and most of the tables were taken away to make room for dancing after the meal. There was just one long table left in the back I think, with some chairs, and I found that there was always plenty of space to sit when I was tired from dancing. Most people will be moving around even if they're not dancing, so you only need a few chairs at any given moment.

    Hi

ee were guests at a wedding where this happened! It was actually really good - around 100 guest so a bit smaller than yours but they just set up areas in the garden and neighbouring Ron with tables for those who didn't want to dance etc. I've also seen cute little coasters which had each guests name on and a funny poem about how they wanted it leaving because they were just on the dance floor so the waiting staff knew not to clear it, and the names meant they knew whose was whose when they came back to them! If you love the venue I think it's a small price to pay x

I think it will be fine. If people want to sit they will be in the Bar and if they are in the main bit they will be dancing anyway.

You said the venue don't offer poser tables but you can hire them if you feel that strongly about it. Is the decor being done in-house or an external venue dresser. If it's the later I would get in touch with them and ask if they can cost a couple of poser tables to give you an idea.

I do really love the venue and this was the only thing putting me off, but seeing a good response from everyone has made me feel better so thank you everyone Smiley smile

I know most people are dancing anyway and the men usually hang around the bar so hopefully it will work.

    Thanks everyone

I'm providing all the decor myself as I'm so fussy I dont think anyone could do things the way I want them haha

I might ask about them tables though as even just a few of them for peoples drinks would be good.

And I love the placemat idea with peoples names to put their drinks on so they know whos is whos.. I will definitley be pinching that idea Smiley smile

    UPDATE

I've spoken to the venue and they said it is fine to hire a few small tables Smiley smile

They also advised that there are lots of wide window ledges which can be used for placing drinks too so thats a bonus

Thats great news. I like the personalised drink mats or some clip to go over the edge of the glass with peoples names on too so everyone finds the right drink after dancing.
