No wedding breakfast…ideas/tips please

Lauren, 6 July, 2021 at 18:46 Posted on Planning 1 13
Looking to get married Q3/Q4 2022, we’d rather not have a sit down meal, mainly as OH isn’t overly keen. Likely to have around 120 guests although some will only arrive for evening (40ish)

Has anyone been to a wedding with food stations only (hog roast, grazing table etc) but no assigned seating?
I’m in the very early stages of planning, so all research at the moment but thinking something like the below in terms of time:
15:00 Ceremony 16:00 Canapés and cocktails with live music (outside if possible) (photos) 18:00 Evening guests arrive food stations available (hog roast, paella, grazing table) 19:00 Band start (inside Recepiton room) 22:00 DJ
All times are approximate.
Any tips or ideas welcome! I’m concerned the day will be too dragged out, I wiki look at entertainment but any ideas of things to keep the momentum going would be great!
Thank you x

Hello, I'm hoping to do something similar. Ceremony is at 2pm then day guests will have canapes after ceremony. The 'wedding breakfast' will be hog roast and a desert table. Then will be having pizzas later on when the evening guests arrived. I havent finalised the details yet but I want to avoid the sit down 3 course meal as it just feels to formal for what we want.
Your day sounds perfect. I wanted a later ceremony but as its December I was worried about it being dark!

Hi! Ah that’s great to hear you have a similar day planned - it’s a worry that the day won’t be filled but I guess I’m over thinking it!
Your day sounds fab, really similar! Have you booked a venue yet? I’ve only contacted a few and they all only offer packages which include playing for a wedding breakfast even if we don’t actually have one…some are like £145 pp which is extreme when no sit down involved!

Yes we have booked a venue, I looked at alot. There were a few I had my heart set on and they were lovely, but they weren't flexible at all like you say. They wanted a sit down 3 course meal at a high price and wouldn't change from this. The venue we booked turned out the be the first one we looked at and when i asked them they were happy to do anything we wanted really. It's definitely worth contacting them before visiting to save you loving somewhere not willing to be flexible like it did.

I know what you mean I do worry about how the day will flow, but I'm trying not to over think it haha!

That’s great advice, thank you! I’ll do some calling around before going. I need to get on with it, I know dates are so limited!
Hope your day goes well! I’m sure it will be amazing! X

We aren't having a wedding breakfast in the formal sense. We are getting married at 1.30pm, having a drinks reception then afternoon tea (informal no table plans) at around 3.30pm. Then music, lawn games, pub quiz (writing our own, as taking part in them is how we spent a lot of our first dates!), and evening Hog Roast/BBQ about 8pm. More music/dancing etc and carriages at 11.30pm.

Our venue is very much a DIY venue and are happy to accommodate pretty much anything. We avoided hotels etc with fixed packages as we knew they were not going to be as flexible or laid back as we would have liked.

You aren't alone with the less formal days! x

We have gone for a blank canvas venue so we bring in our own caterers. We have gone for a bbq then have hired an ice cream van for desert! We then have a pizza van for evening! We are going to do games at the drink reception to keep guests entertained!

Ooh all these ideas sound fab!
We’re gonna have a formal seating plan but we’re having afternoon tea rather than a three course meal and then hot sarnies in the evening. I’m hoping the weather will be nice so we can make the most of the outdoor space for the drinks reception and games.

    A feasting table sounds amazing
We had hoped to do that but our venue we have too many people so they are serving to tables instead
The idea of feasting sounds much more communal and together rather than people head down on their own plate especially if everyone doesn't know each other

We're having an afternoon tea and buffet in the afternoon straight after the ceremony. Loads of friends and familiy have volunteered to make stuff and then we're hired a pizza van for the evening so guests can help themselves to slices of pizza all night.

We're still having a seating plan but will be very informal and people can help themselves as and when and hopefully no one will ever be hungry!
