noisy eaters and clicking jaws...

muffins, 11 September, 2008 at 10:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I have always had real difficulties with noisy eaters? -I usually move away/make a cup of tea avoid sitting next to them?

My husband shares this and whilst his eating habits are very good? his jaw clicks as he eats? and it drives me mad! I know he cant help it but that does not stop me getting really cross and often unable to focus or enjoy what I am eating cause the noise seems to echo around the room, he knows not to sit next to me if he is eating crisps or cereal as my patience snaps (not proud but to me its like nails down a blackboard? However, I do not want to feel like this every meal time but apart from eating in seperate rooms or wearing ear plugs I do not know what to do!

Anyone else find noisy eating so difficult to tolerate or is it just me?

I have real difficulties as well with noisy eaters, so much so that I can't sit anywhere near my FIL when he is eating as he bangs his teeth together when eating, even if he is eating a yoghurt and makes so much noise that I just want to smack him hard in the face. MIL makes excuses up for him and says he only does it because he has a hard bite. When FIL eats a sweet its like he is crunching on pebbles and that makes me feel physically sick. I tend to avoid sitting next to him at family gatherings as I know that I won't be able to cope with his noisy eating.

I share an office with someone who's a terribly noisy eater - he masticates each mouthful really slowly and noisily, and it makes me queasy to listen. He tends to eat lots of fruit, and there is lots of munching on apples and pears - on average he has at least 3 pieces of fruit a day.

I try and use the phone whenever he starts to eat, to try and distract my mind, so that I am having to listen to something else.

I do feel terrible about it, as I may well annoy him with the things I do, but his eating sounds really irritate me quite irrationally.

I'm like this, but I hate the sound of ANYONE eating! It goes right through me, I can hear every single chew they are doing, I hate the sound of swallowing yuck! ARGH! I put on the radio to mask the sound. When we are elsewhere, I will put up with it if I have to, but my husband has got into the habit of making a joke of it, and now everyone seems to know to put on some sort of background noise (It doesn't have to be loud or intrusive, but just - there iykwim)

I hate the noisy eating thing too - I'm a bit funny about people cleaning their teeth and stuff in front of me too - makes we want to be sick!

But I do have a clicky jaw. There is nothing that can be done (its gristle catching in the joint), so I'm sorry!

I create a LOT of saliva - H has very sensitive hearing about things like that and I get lots of glares... I can't help it... He seems to think I can change it, but I don't even notice... Smiley sad If anyone has a solution to needing lots of saliva to eat stuff (and, no, drinks help, but not enough) so I don't need to generate as much so it doesn't make noise, please let me know!

I listen to my MP3 people at lunch time to avoid listening to people eating... Makes me feel ill! I get really bad mouth ulcers and sometimes struggle to eat quietly, in which case I'll eat in my car to avoid annoying others!!

I have a clicky jaw. My husband notices it but he laughs about it.

Nothing that can be done, it's just one of those things.

If it's really really bothering you that much I'd try hypnotherapy or similar to try and get over your problem - it must be difficult as a couple to want to kick your husband every time he eats - I guess candlit dinners are out in your house!

    I can't bear noisy eaters.

I used to work with a lady who ate very noisily & then licked every one of her fingers in turn?.
