NON-TRADITIONAL WEDDING DRESSES

Morgan-Vaughan, 22 of January of 2014 at 18:59 Posted on Planning 0 18

Hi everyone,

I'm keen on the idea of a non-traditional wedding dress... I think it might be cheaper as well as a bit more practical for our Youth Hostel/outdoor wedding Smiley smile

My thoughts are something knee-length or mid-calf and perhaps a reduced price designer or couture piece? I would love some sort of quirky details like ruffles, feathers or a bow.

Has anyone bought something similar and could you share where you found your dress please - I'm thinking boutiques, designer outlets, Ebay?? Any ideas of inspiration would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much

The dresses you described are becoming more and more mainstream tbh. 3 years ago tea length was a shock- now everyone is at it!

There are a Million places you could look for actress that isn't a wedding dress- you just need to look around. All of the sites you described sound a good place to start.

Hiya I agree there is nothing too unusual about what I'm looking for, I guess I'm looking for some guidance re: individual success stories as you are right - there are a million place to look but that feels quite daunting in itself Smiley smile

Have you looked at vivien of holloway? fifties style with petticoats. Not couture but very affordable and fabulous!

I drew a picture of roughly what I wanted and took it to a dressmaker that has made other clothes for me.

    Wow

absolutely stunning thank you! this is just the kind of thing i'm thinking of and definitely something i wouldn't naturally stumble across so thank you for the recommendation!!

did you have to spend much time at her shop/studio? only wondering as Brighton is a trek for me and would add to costs.

    thank you though Smiley smile

definitely more the first one although i would be keen to incorporate sleeveless/bandeau if possible. quite an eye opener though thank you - both of those look quite bridal, i would consider anything along those lines - upper end of high street - prices are good and easy to try them on etc.

i do really like the first one, especially the detailing at the bottom.

how lovely Smiley smile did that reduce costs do you think? or was it purely so that you could create something unique? it seems that you might live near me, would you possibly recommend the dressmaker?

    thank you Smiley smile

what a beautiful website, thank you!

You are right, I probably wouldn't consider that specific design but there are several others which are really beautiful thank you! and their website is lovely, I like the ethos behind their designs.

Most of my clothes are 60s vintage so I knew I wanted something in that style. It did bring down the cost too as I bought the fabric myself and only paid for the making of it. The girl that made mine specialises in 60s fashion but she will make other stuff. ( Her web page is Carnaby Streak, she is based in Birmingham ).She makes clothes for Stacie Stewart and she made her bridesmaid's dress.

If you are thinking of 50s style for your bridesmaids try this fab website Lady V London.

A few of the Hitched ladies have had dresses from there.

Have you heard of Hazaar of London? I spotted them on #weddinghour on twitter this evening. They make dresses that adapt for the evening. They look amazing! A really clever idea. I would have seriously considered them if I hadn't already chosen my dress (plus I'm not sure I could have faced the disapproval from my mother!)

It's shockingly difficult to come by ethical bridal wear, or most of them are really expensive, I have a pin board where I'm trying to collect some eco wedding wear and I'm releasing a blog post with a list of a few. Menswear is even harder to find ethically produced suits. If you're into conscientious wedding gear then oxfam have really good bridal boutiques around the country but you have to book an appointment I believe!
