Notice of Marriage Validity/ Approval

JLJ, 16 August, 2021 at 18:11 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi All,

We have our wedding appointment for this on 04/10 and are hoping to get married on 13/11 therefore more than the required 29 days later. This is a little tighter than we would have liked but there was a bit of a backlog in the appointments which is why we've had to wait until October.

Assuming that we get the notice of marriage on 04/10 how long is it then valid for?

If we had to change the date of the wedding would that notice still be valid xyz months later? Is it valid indefinitely?

On another note, is there any possibility of us being turned down for a marriage notice? We were both born here and have lived here for almost our whole lives. We've been together many years and own a house together so should be able to show that there is nothing dodgy going on.

Are we right to worry about this or should it be a pretty smooth process?

We gave notice last month, I was quite nervous but shouldn't have been, like Sarah said they just ask where & when your getting married, yours and your partner's DOBs, address and occupations then your father's occupations. We were in the room together while all the questions were asked, we weren't separated. We were only in there about 15 minutes. Just make sure you bring the correct documents and you'll be fine.

We're pretty relaxed about that now I think but still concerned about the lack of leeway between the appointment date and our wedding date. The delay between the two is 39 days and the registration needs to be in place for 29 days. If something happens with the appointment (another lockdown or one of us is ill or the registrar is off work and we can't get another appointment quickly) and it gets delayed or cancelled then this could very stressful as we potentially couldn't actually get the married as we wouldn't be registered. By then we would already have sent out all invites and paid out £8k+ on the venue/food that we wouldn't be able to recover.

Its a small risk but big consequences if something did go wrong and it would be playing on our minds for the next 6 weeks until 04/10 when we completed the process.

Its something that we can't control and there is no possible plan B and and so it may be better to push it back until January 2022 so that we know that this will definitely be completed. This seems like a shame as all of the elements that we can control such as venue, dress, rings etc are coming together well.

Not sure what reassurance the local registrar can really give us? They've already told us that there is a backlog due to lockdowns and so its not like we can get bumped up the list due to urgency.

Oh right, I see what you mean. Could you call your local registrar and try and get an appointment sooner from any cancellations? We weren't given our ceremony planner to pick our vows until we had given notice and that needs to be sent back to the registrar a month before the ceremony. They aren't giving you a lot of time.

We're going to call them tomorrow and try to get it moved forward but we aren't to hopeful. We're not having a church wedding or any kind of religious service so the ceremony itself will be easy enough to plan but without that registration I think we're stuck and so will need to push back the date until q1 2022 but not sure when as have no certainty of when. I would hope that the registration cant be delayed by more than 1-2 months past our origibal appointment but cant be sure.

Did you put your wedding date in when you booked it? I would have thought they will prioritise those with the closest dates.
We're actually getting married at the registry office so ours might be a bit different.

We just rang them and they said they can't prioritise and that our best hope is to try and get it moved forward if there's a cancellation. We're very wary about paying out £8k+ in case the wedding can't go ahead.

The council are saying that the chances of our appointment are being cancelled are very small as, even if staff were ill, they would find another colleague to cover the appointment.

A small risk but very costly if something goes wrong.
