Number of groomsmen

Jenna, 1 January, 2023 at 11:13 Posted on Planning 0 6
Hi all, especially 2023 brides! Happy New Year! I’m definitely a bride who doesn’t mind going against tradition and doing things our own way, but I could do with some opinions on this topic as it’s one of the only things myself and my partner are disagreeing on. My partner has 5 groomsmen (his best friends) and wants them to all wear matching suits, which will be just plain black suits in line with our monochrome theme. I have suggested that I would like my Dad and 3 older brothers to also wear the same black suits. That would mean there would be 10 of them in black suits. The issue is, we are only having 60 day guests so that would mean that one sixth of the day guests would be matching. I don’t think that’s that bad but he seems to think it’s a lot! I really want my brothers to feel involved as I am their only sister. Thoughts…?

We have a similar issue. My partner has 7 groomsman, we will also be putting my dad, his dad and his step dad in the same suits. So all together 12 suits, with our wedding party total at about 120 people. So 10% of the people will be in the same suit.

Honestly I don’t think it’s an issue especially as the suits you’re having are black! If they were bright pink I think it would stand out more! The guests that wear suits will typically stick to grey, navy or black, so I don’t think they will look odd! X

I really don’t think it’s too many, so maybe your partner dislikes the idea for another reason - perhaps he’s concerned that his chosen groomsmen won’t feel special?

I had to speak to my FH because he wanted his female best friend and 3 cousins to wear the exact same colour as my bridesmaids. Not the same dress, but he said it’d be nice for them to match the colour scheme. I said I’d prefer it if they didn’t try to match because they’re not part of the wedding party and I want my bridesmaids to feel special. I don’t care if they wear the same colour generally, just not the exact same shade (lilac).

I guess the difference here is that black is a lot more subtle than lilac, so maybe not a real issue, but it might be worth asking if there’s more to your FH’s lack of enthusiasm than just the percentage of guests in the same suit.

Our dads are wearing different suits but matching ties and buttonholes to the guys in the wedding party - so that might be an option for you?

Mums and FSIL are going to have wrist corsages that match the bridesmaids' bouquets.

Since black is a common colour for suits anyway, I don't think it will be too much. You may even find other guests wearing black suits. Have you asked if your father and brothers actually want to match though? And if your OH is happy for them to wear the same as his groomsmen? Otherwise, you could follow Chloe's suggestion of having matching/coordinating ties. I think your brothers are going to feel involved anyway, because it is your wedding, whatever they are wearing.

We have 11 buttonholes and 6 corsages/flower crowns for the people we want to feel a special part of the day (best man, groomsmen, bridal party, parents, page boy and flower girl). We won't get matching suits for all the blokes, but I don't think it will matter if colours are neutral.

Sure that will be fine. We are having a micro wedding so won't have more than 30 guests. Out of that 6 of those will be wearing the same outfits. My OH is having a Best Woman instead of a Best Man. If he'd had a BM there would have been 7 the same. I'm fine with that.
