Occupation on wedding certificate........

emabee, 16 May, 2014 at 10:44 Posted on Planning 0 12

So we gave notice of marriage at our local register office a few weeks ago and yesterday I picked up the certificate to go to the registrar. It might sound a silly little thing but they've put my job title as 'Car Sales Receptionist' and it sounds rubbish! I hate my job, it was only ever meant to be a stop gap and I'm currently interviewing for a fab PA job. Can I have my job title changed later? I haven't sent it to the registrar yet, I'm holding back until I know what can be done.

It's ridiculous I know but I'm just so unhappy at work right now that I don't want this job title on my wedding certificate forever!!

I don't think that you can change it once it is on your wedding certificate?

Could you just put receptionist and leave off the car sales part??

Sorry I'm not being more helpful

I’m sorry that you’re feeling down about it. I would call the registrar as it’s likely to be different for each one. When we registered, I had a different job with a slightly different title, which is what they took down. On our wedding day, the Registrar asked me what my job title was during the little interview before the ceremony and I gave her my new one, so it might not be too late! But like I say, each registrar is different so I would contact them if it’s upsetting.

I don’t really understand why you have to give them your job title anyway!

I think Its worth asking them what they can do

    Are these your blue forms?

Im not sure about the job title but I know other details like addresses can be changed before the wedding. Ours is complicated as we had to do a residency period and give notice in the parish where we will be married so our address on our forms is my parents address where we stayed for the residency period. The registrar who went through the forms with us told us that we could change that to our actual address before the wedding if we want to.

It would be worth asking the registrar at the office who is marrying you as they will be able to make the changes for you.

The registrars meet you prior to the wedding (while you are getting ready usually) they check the info for the form in case anything has changed. So at that point, you should be able to have the correct thing written in.

You won't be able to get it changed after the wedding as far as I know.

    Hi Emabee

I fully understand your dilemma re. this, although mine is slightly different. We went to the registrar to give notice, she interviewed us separately. She asked me what my dad's occupation was (he died when I was 17, 22 years ago now) - this made me panic as I'd taken lots of ID etc with me but not my dad's death certificate as I'd not thought about this, nor to ask my mum what his title was when he died. The lady was lovely and left this part blank and said not to worry as it would all be double checked on the wedding day by the registrar so I had time to find this out and get the right thing put on the wedding certificate. I mentioned this to a friend and her husband - he said 'what difference does it make to your wedding?' - well this is pretty important to me and I want it to be right. I've now filled in the form to send to the registrar's office with the correct information on but am sure it'll be checked again just before the actual ceremony.

I'd say ring your local register office where you gave notice and speak to a registrar to get some reassurance that your job title can be altered - I'm pretty sure it could be at this stage. If it was something to do with your name and/or ID then maybe it'd be different - but they must get requests/changes frequently and have to make allowances for this.

Thanks so much everyone. I emailed our registrar and she has just confirmed that they check your occupation on the day of the wedding and update it on your marriage certificate. Sorted.

    Now......what shall I be?.....maybe a professional bridezilla?!?

When I was asked what I did for a living, I said 'housewife'. It's what I am, and I'm proud of it lol - she wrote down 'houseperson'. I just might get that changed to part-time student, mother, taxi driver, launderer, carer, cleaner, counsellor, guide etc... ?

I wonder if i get accepted into uni before my wedding day I could put down on there 'Student Midwife' as opposed to my current job. I wouldn't have started uni until after the wedding but technically.... haha I may be pushing my luck there lol!!
