OMs - Did the rain ruin your big day?

Hoddy, 15 August, 2013 at 10:15 Posted on Planning 0 24

I know when I booked my wedding some family members said things like "oooh July, at least the weather should be nice" but the weather has never really crossed my mind as being an issue. If it rains we have plenty of photo opportunities inside and I will still be gaining a husband at the end of it all.

So I was just wondering if anyone else has any views on it....did the rain ruin your day at all? And those who aren't married yet is it something you worry about?

We're getting married mid March and the weather is a concern but we're not guaranteed good weather at any time of year!

Obviously I'd love it to be dry and sunny, but to be honest I can't see the weather ruining anyone's wedding day (unless of course it's extreme hurricane or something!)

Yes. The 3 drops of rain we felt meant my wedding was a complete waste! ?

No, it rained a tiny bit, and was otherwise overcast and cold, but honestly, who cares? it's an amazing day no matter the weather! Sounds like you know that, though.

It rained in the morning, but had stopped by the time I got in the car to the ceremony. I was glad it didn't rain, but it wouldn't have ruined the day if it had. We had a wet weather plan for drinks and photos which wouldn't have been quite as nice, but we'd have managed!

I am worried about the weather, as we really want some photos taken outside. I guess sunny and dry weather just makes thing easier doesn't it, but if it rains, it rains. Nothing I can do. But I am trying to think up a wet-weather plan just in case...

We're getting married in April (April showers) but I'm not stressing about it, you have no control over it as long as you have a plan for both dry and wet weather.

My friend got married a few weeks ago, we were begging for sun - then we moaned it was too hot then there was a huge thunderstorm and lots of rain - we moaned about getting our hair wet....you can't win!

I also think the same as you - I will be a Mrs at the end of the day no matter what the weather is like

Folk said that to us too, about the weather, but I'm not stupid! I've lived in the UK all my life, my birthday is July, I know it can rain PLENTY! I've had birthday BBQs on the hottest day of the year, and I've had some that were washed out.

I thought July was the best month to choose, for the weather, but that's not why we chose it. If it rained I imagined us in the village hall, crammed in, maybe playing musical chairs with the kids, plus the limbo etc that we put outside, but inside. It would have been funny. The bouncy castle would have gone to waste, but the day wouldn't have! ?

I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be a little bit disappointed if it rained. The venue we've picked is on the river and has this lovely spot for an outside ceremony and loads of lovely photo opps. Our wedding is in August, however, it's in Scotland! :o) So I'm just being realistic about it. It's something you've got no control over what so ever so what's the point in stressing about it. Or that's how I try to look at it anyway! If it does rain, the room we can have the ceremony in is gorgeous and by the end of the day.... We'll be husband and wife and any little mishaps or bad weather won't take the shine off of that! :o)

I'm getting married in February so I just hope it doesn't snow so badly that people can't travel to the wedding! I hope it doesn't rain ALL day as I would like to get at least a couple of shots outside, but of course it wouldn't ruin the day. If you plan an outdoor wedding in the UK, you really should take a good long look at the weather we have!

I've honestly never known a wedding to be ruined by rain. We're shot weddings where it's chucked it down all day and although it may change plans slightly, when you're surrounded by family and friends and having a lovely time it might not seem like the most important thing anymore.

I know it can be really disappointing if you've had your heart set on specific outdoor activities or a particular "feel" to your day, but the day will only be what you make it and if you let it get you down that's how you'll remember it. If you make the most of it, you'll have a fabulous time regardless

I know that's really easy to say when it's not my wedding and i'm sure i'll feel equally stressed about the weather when our day rolls around, but it really, really isn't worth worrying about as its unfortunately one of those things that no one can change.

You can still get some fantastic photos outdoors in the rain if you're brave enough to venture out. Always have a back up plan- umbrellas, flat shoes/wellies and a wrap/cardigan and you wont go far wrong ?

Yes!! Getting married outside,.. in Central Park, New York in June so it had best be sunny! Having said that our photographer has shown us pics of rainy day weddings that he's shot and the wellies and brollies actually look quite cute!

My OH sister got married over 6 years ago and it rained literally non-stop all day. I can honestly say it was such good fun seeing everyone dodging the rain and the bride and groom had some amazing photos with brollies, and at one point a beautiful rainbow appeared!! However, it doesn't matter what the topic of coversation, FMIL will tell anyone who will listen how awful the day was because of the rain. I can honestly say though that is a reflection on her not the weather! I don't really worry about it as I assume it will be sunny ? ignorance is bliss!!

I have a selection of photos (link below) that I show bride and grooms if they are worried about rain on their day especially after last year, Its not just the rain that can force you indoors as wild winds can be just as bad, and the cold, and depending on the time of the year it could just even be too dark, so I have put together a selection of all of those things to show what can be done. It is very rare for it to be non stop rain and all you need is a 1/2 hour window at the right time, I always have a back up plan for photos indoors .

I'm getting married next August and I am worried about the weather but as others have said, there's not much that can be done if it does rain. My venue has a supply of umbrellas in case the rain makes an appearance but I'm also thinking of ordering a handful of umbrellas in the same colour as the BM's dresses just in case.

I'm getting married in April and I know the chances are it will rain at some point in the day. I'm not worried by it though, growing up in Manchester has made me immune to rain ?. I've already got my eye on some wedding umbrellas to get me from car to venue as I think the only thing that would bother me is if I looked like a drowned rat before I even walked down the aisle. I'll be going outside afterwards come rain or shine as our venue is stood along the canal and it's absolutely lovely nearby, so I may get a nice pair of wellies too.

Autocorrect seems to think I want a pair of willies.

We had glorious sunshine all morning, then it clouded over a bit, and started to drizzle just as we started the photos! We moved inside for the rest of them. It then brighted up about half an hour later and was sunny all the rest of the day!

Of course I am disappointed that I did not get my beautiful stately home in the background of all the formal shots but that is life and they will still be lovely. The ones of me and OH will prob be a bit overcast but sure a bit of photoshop will brighten them or put them in black and white, and the shots from the morning at the church were super sunny!

It certainly didnt affect my enjoyment of my day at all. It lashed it down and blew a gale at my sister's and that didn't matter either, her photos are incredible! :-)

We'd all love wall to wall sunshine and a pleasantly warm but not too hot 21 degrees, but we live in the UK ladies! There are no promises! Get over it!

Ha ha we flew halfway round the world to guarantee dry weather and sunshine. Actually, that's a lie, there were many other reasons, but we did assume we would be on a hot sun drenched beach. And it STILL managed to be cloudy and rain a few spots as I walked across the beach to marry OH!! Did it ruin the day? No, not at all, but I will confess to being rather disappointed that we didn't have the unbroken sunshine we'd hoped for. Just shows, no matter what you do, you can't control the weather!

I would have been gutted if it had rained, we had an outdoor ceremony in a woodland in May. The weather was iffy all morning with a bit of drizzle and I was doing my nut! I kept telling myself that it wouldn't matter if it was inside but truthfully it would have. Luckily the sun came out just as I was walking down to the wood and walking into the clearing with the sunshine coming through the trees was the magical moment that me and OH had dreamed of from the second we looked at the venue. By 3 o clock it was black sky and raining- didn't care a bit by then!

I sort of want the best of both, im hoping for a bit of rain as i'm a bit of a ghoul and if it was huge thunder and lightening storms i'd be in my glory, and our tog has amazing pics of couples in the rain and it looks brill, but we're having a beauford convertible and would love the open top for a bit so don't want it then haha.
I'll be happy either way and no weather will spoil my day, i'm in Glasgow so fairly used to and expecting rain even in June Smiley smile

I'm absolutely desperate for lots of outdoor pics so I'll be disappointed if it did rain. I'm expecting rain so then if it doesn't it will be a bonus!

However the day must go on and deep down does it really matter?! (Yes! Hehe!)

I chose March for that very reason - so people wouldn't say daft things about the weather.

I was prepared for the worst so know I would have loved it whatever happened, weather wise.

Far worse than rain (it passes and you get periods where you can usually get outside) is cold and wind. These will affect you and guests much more. The worst weather I have ever had on a wedding was an August around 10 years ago...apart from that, as said, rain stops and if the client wishes, we go outside.....

Amusing aside, on two different weddings, we had a thunderclap when the vicar was waiting for the "I do" from the groom!!!!Caused much amusement in the congregation!!!!! The second of those weddings we had a flood in the hotel during the reception....We still managed shots outside before the full on rains came though!!!!!
