On holiday tomorrow. I'm shitting myself.

LizBjk, 13 May, 2008 at 07:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

I'm really really nervous, my stomach is in knots. I haven't been on a plane since I was 9. I feel sick at the thought. I don't want to go.?

I find wine helps! Just keep thinking about the lovely holiday that you're going to have.

I'm going to Cyprus. Tbh I wish I didn't have to go. I feel so sick at the thought of getting on that plane. I don't even know why. I had no idea I was even nervous about flying until this morning.

Gnomette's right - focus on the lovely time you'll have, and try some herbal calming remedies (e.g. Kalms, Bach Rescue Remedy, gin...).

I'm like this sometimes even though I have flown lots of times. All I can do was try to keep calm and take deep breaths, once you are up in the air you'll be fine.

Thanks everyone. I think it's also the fact we're taking our 3 and 4 year old. I'm nervous enough going away myself never mind being in charge of two young children. I'm just really not looking forward to going now.

Ah - in that case, may I recommend that you skip the first two remedies I suggested and dose yourself liberally with gin.

    (Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be fine.)

I hated flying but after a major panic attack at the airport a few years ago I went and got some valium from my GP. It was the best thing I ever did. I have 2 children and obviously didn't want to be to out of it to look after them. I had 2mg and it was fabulous.

I know find although I don't enjoy flying I can relax and look forward to our trip because the nerves won't be there. You will have a fantastic time I am very jealous..x

I share your pain - I am so scared of flying and spend weeks before bricking myself. I always take a book with me and read that so that I am less aware of what is going on (and of course a few swift drinkies before help as well!).

But I am determined to get over this as we are going to New Zealand and Japan next year hopefully.

I'm sure you'll be fine - it really is the thought that is worse than the reality.

You'll be fine. It's only a short flight, and once you're up there you pretty much forget you're flying. And it'll be so worth it once you're there adn having a fabby time.

Hope you have a lovely hol.

I tried answering this morning, but hitched crashes on my work PC whenever I post! I just wanted to say, just remember how much you've been looking forward to this holiday. And now you've got valium, enjoy that too ?

I know several people have mentioned having a drink, but I'd really advise against that. However, what I would suggest is that you get to check-in fairly early and tell them that you are really nervous. You'll be able to board first because of the children so when you'll have a chance to have a word with the crew. Let them know you are nervous and that way they can help you and keep an eye out for you. If you let them know that you are trying not to let the kids know then they will be discreet.

On a purely practical, rather than emotional, viewpoint. I have been flying as cabin crew for almost 11 years. In that time I have had exactly no - yep, that's right, no - incidents which in anyway threatened the aircraft or the passengers. I've had turbulence that passengers have thought was bad but it's not - have you ever heard of an aircraft being shaken out of the sky ? No, because it doesn't happen. Aircraft can sustain an awful lot before anything bad happens. You will be absolutely fine.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday - I wish I was going but it's work for me.
