OT Contact lenses

PenelopeP, 7 September, 2008 at 22:22 Posted on Planning 0 17

I am suddenly having a wibble. I have worn glasses my entire life and never worn contact lenses - mostly because I'm as blind as a bat and very squeamish so worry about being able to put them in.Anyway, I'm going to the opticians this week to sort out a new pair of specs for our wedding - my current ones are looking a bit worse for wear having worn them every day for more than a year. I suddenly started wondering whether I should just give contacts a go for our wedding, with a view to having some wedding photos where I'm not wearing glasses. I was thinking of wearing them for the morning and then taking them out and putting my glasses on later if I can't manage the entire day in them. They'd be handly for sports and other things as well.

Our wedding is 4 weeks away - anyone know how long it takes to sort out contacts from the initial appointment to getting them. Have I time, or should I just forget it?

I went for my initial appointment and came away wearing contact lenses. You've plenty of time. No need to be squeamish either. You don't actually have to touch your eye. Of course, they may not be suitable for you. My H can't wear them; just can't bring himself to go anywhere near his eyes with them. Luckily, he looks better in his glasses! But you won't know unless you try!

    Good luck.

Thanks - I'm not sure it will be that quick for me. I have a stigmatism and am long sighted, so I think my lenses would have to be made to the shape of my lens, but I will definitely ask.

I have a stigmatism in one eye & have a special lense for it. The right eye has normal lenses.

When I first wore contacts it took a while to get used to them. I wore them for a couple of hours a day, gradually building up to being able to wear them for 8 hours+

The worst bit was trying to put them in. At first it took ages, but after a few days I had got used to it. You still have plenty of time before your wedding if that's what you want to do

Like Mel, my OH can't get on with contact lenses so he will be in his glasses, but I prefer him in his specs ?

Depending on how bad your stigmatism is, contacts can help to partially correct it. That's why H tried. Optician recommended them. And he wouldn't have had to get special ones.

I wear glasses everyday, adn have contacts for the evenign when I go out. I got mine straight away. You do have to build up, so start off by wearing them for an hour then increase bit by bit. I've been lucky in that I've not really had many problems at all and find them easy to use. However, if I am particularly tired, near the end of the night they do get sore.

And I have found on one or two occassions, that one has popped out during the night, but being so drunk I've not noticed!!!! Talk about being blind drunk!! Slightly worrying! ?

Think Pink, couldn't help replying to this, it sounds so like me when I first tried contacts. I'm sure you've tried everything, but I had huge huge problems taking them out & someone told me this & it really helped. I've been wearing them for about a year now & getting on fine.

I find I have to have really dry fingers to get the lenses out, otherwise they are hard to grab hold of. Wet fingers to put them in and dry to take them out!

Also, if when I place my fingers on the lens I do a little blink as I try to pinch the lens it seems to make it come out alot easier - this is the bit that someone told me to do & its really hard to explain, but really worked well for me.

    I hope this helps anyway.

I started wearing contact lenses just for sport three years ago and I now wear night and day monthlies (i.e the ones you put in and take out 4 weeks later).

I also had a lot of difficulties in taking them out at first and couldn't get on with either of the techniques that I was shown by the optician, so I just worked out my own way of doing things! I just push the lens into the corner of my eye and then it will normally pop out on it's own (or it will if I half close my eyes). That way I don't have to do any of this pinching malarkey!

I'm sticking with my glasses! I used to wear contacts a few years ago and just fell out of love with them. Was pondering wearing them again for wedding but then I just thought hell - I wear glasses every day - why should I wear contacts just for one day - nobody really knows me in anything ut glasses and I want to look like myself! I'm having my hair down as well for that reason!

My advice would be try practising wearing them for a good while before the wedding to work out if you feel comfortable. I found they dried my eyes out and the thought of being uncomfortable on my wedding day just makes me want the easier option!

I can't do contacts. I used to wear them, then something hideous happened with them which I won't go into which almost left me blind in one eye.

Anyway, the point I wanted to make is this. If you want to try contacts, then by all means go for it! But the thing is, that most people who see you everyday in glasses probably won't recognise you! I'm just not going to worry about the glasses thing - to be honest, they're great at covering up a bit more of my ugly mush so I'd better keep them on!

I have gas permeable lenses - they take about 10 days to come in from ordering them - and you can have a consultation and order them on the same day from D&A. PLus am longsighted. I've worn lenses for around 10 years and almost never wear my glasses - and only had 3 eye infections in all that time (cleared up in a couple of days)

If you have soft lenses, as everyone says, I think you can just walk out with them.

Gas permeables take a little longer to get used to but really worth it - up to you really. But I would go to your opticians asap just to give you the time to get used to them

I've worn contact lenses for about 12 years and normally wear fortnightly ones. However I got some daily ones for the wedding and honeymoon and they were very comfortable. Would definately recommend them.

I think it depends whether you feel more confident in lenses or glasses and also what you think you look better in for your wedding photos as you will have them forever!

My SIL2B wore glasses and now really regrets it because although she was beautiful she would of looked even better without glasses (and even on the day tried taking her glasses off for some of the photos but then couldn't see where she was meant to look!!).

I do think it is worth trying though. I love contacts and will definitely be wearing them!

I wear contacts during the summer and glasses during the winter, cos i love to wear cool sunglasses and don't want to bother with prescription sunnies.

i will be wearing contacts on my wedding as i prefer how i look - i wear the fortnightly contacts too, which i do ok with. the daily disposables are probably the easiest to try with as they are the softest lenses. just don't forget to take them out at the end of the day - i have forgotten once or twice after a few drinks, and my eyelids are literally glued together the next morning - yuck.
