OT My teacher application - need advice please...

teeheeyoucrazyguys!, 24 January, 2010 at 13:46 Posted on Planning 0 11

The format of the applications changed and I'm now having to write 'essays'. One question I've been asked is how do i go about creating a good environment to ensure effective learning/teaching etc. This always reads like a trick question to me..... what does this mean to you?

Are we talking about classroom lay out? Are we discussing classroom management? is it both????? I had an interview once where I started going on about my resources and classroom management and it still wasnt what they were after...... I didnt say the 'magic words' whatever they were meant to be...

any help appreciated Smiley smile

Sorry im not a teacher and im sure some of the teachers on here can give you better advice but you can have my opinion for what its worth.

I would say they are asking what sort of physical and emotional (couldn't think of a better word) environment you create and what routines you have in place allowing you to manage behaviour by preventing the bad behaviour from happening in the first place.

Apologies if im wrong, as I said Im not a teacher but I didn't want to leave you hanging?

I'm not sure what age group you teach but I teach college level and I think its asking about inclusion, differentiation and ECM. Well thats my interperperation of the question. I have been often asked during interviews how I incorporate this into lessons things like Handouts ( different colours, large font etc), positive learning environment, safeguarding kids, use of appropriate language for level teaching, extension tasks.

    Hope this helps

I hate questions like that when they're thrown at you in interviews. Probably different schools want different answers. It could be about how welcoming the environment is, how approachable you are to deal with issues from children & parents. It could be about interactive displays to reinforce, extend and challenge children's knowledge. Or maybe about children understanding their own learning and knowing each lesson what their learning objective is, what they need to be able to do to acheive these, & have targets displayed. So many different slants you could take on it.

    Good luck

Cheers blackcat, you're right. Always a loaded answer..... I was also asked to write about assessment and the use of ICT in my classroom but y'know, as a visiting teacher I have a box of tricks and I'm expected to teach in any space from a tiny classroom to a large echoey, horrible noisy dining hall.....Ive mentioned displays but it dont mean sh!t in the real world lololol

I would think it could include stuff like working walls being easy for children to use, curricular targets if displayed being child friendly, also awareness of VAK learning styles, also something as basic as the layout being safe for children to navigate and easy access to resources around the classroom.

Buzz words like- excellence and enjoyment, ECM, success criteria, inclusion, ermmmmmm can't think of anymore at the mo!

I am not in education, but I am in recruitment and environment means something very different to me. It means if I can describe it ,atmosphere, comfortable and relaxed easy to learn in , matching the needs of the learner, which is all vague sorry
