Our dog at our wedding

Colin, 26 April, 2022 at 10:21 Posted on Planning 0 8
Morning all, we have a 70kg newfoundland dog. He's coming up to 2 years old. The issue me and beautiful fiancee have is, should we bring him to the wedding?

Has anyone got any experience of a large dog at their wedding. I know everydog is different and ours is great 90% of the time. I'm interested to hear from different people's perspective or experience. Amy help would be great
ThanksColin and Charlotte

Only you can know how your dog will behave but when you say bring him to the wedding how long do you mean.

I have shot weddings with dogs and mostly they tend to be brought to the wedding to visit after the ceremony and during the photos. Or they have been at the ceremony and even delivered the rings but they never stay all day and are gone by the time the wedding breakfast starts.

We've got a place booked for three nights.

He'll be fine the Friday family meal and the Sunday bbq. It's just the wedding day I'm a tad unsure about.
Hes a gentle giant to be fair. Just after some experiences to help decide
    Thanks for the reply bill

I love Newfoundland! So big and fluffy! I would love my dog to come to my wedding but it's not allowed.

It might be a bit pricey but if you are worried could you hire a dog sitter to be with him during the day. If he get too excited or jumpy ect (if that's what you're worried about) they can take him out of the wedding for a walk? If I could have my dog that's what I would do.
    Hope this helps Smiley smile

We're having dogs at the wedding! Mine is medium sized, my parents is a large doodle and in a coincidence my brother is looking to get a newfy too so there's likely to be one at ours who'll be around a year old by the time of the wedding!

My parents have booked a cottage on the venue's estate so minutes away from the ceremony/reception areas which I think is crucial. It means the dogs can be put to bed there when the disco starts, and also dropped back by someone for a nap/food if they get too out of hand and need some calm down time!

I also have multiple people (happily!) tasked with being on dog duty so it's not taking up just one person's day - plus my dog will be "flower pup" so with the bridesmaids and the other dogs will be "ushers" so with the human ushers meaning they're not just going to be let loose!

We had our large 18 month old pup at the wedding. Hired a wedding chaperone and she was amazing. She kept our pup the night before and gave her a bubble bath and groom, walked her before bringing her to the wedding to burn some energy, kept her focused and calm during the photos, controlled her around all our guests and walked her away when it was getting too much. Photos are honestly amazing, she did a brilliant job keeping pup calm and we're so pleased she was there because she's part of the family. We spent a bit of time getting to know the chaperone beforehand so our pup was really comfortable and trusted her. Would definitely recommend if there's someone you can trust to keep your dog calm.

We're planning on having our elderly terrier around for the outdoor elements of our wedding then her usual dog walker will collect her before the wedding breakfast. We know that the whole day will be too much for her and we don't want to put upon people to have to look after her all day.

I was debating for so long about bringing my miniature Jack Russell (quite the difference to a Newfoundland, I know!) but she is a rescue, has a lot of separation anxiety and gets very overwhelmed and excited easily in new places with too many people. So after debating for a long time, I decided it’s best she doesn’t attend as we are travelling to Scotland for our wedding and it’s far to take her for her to get overwhelmed and disrupt the ceremony. It’s all about how your dog behaves and no one knows your dog better than yourself!
