Outdoor wedding - microphone?

MrsP2B-2015, 17 February, 2015 at 13:22 Posted on Planning 0 11

I'm (weather permitting) having an outdoor ceremony in August. Anyone else with a similar ceremony - are you having a PA system / microphone for the service? My OH is quite softly spoken, whereas I'm a loud mouth, but quite worried I'll be blubbing my way through the whole thing...!

We're having 90 guests, so potentially the people at the back will be quite far away.

I'm considering it, but don't want it to feel like some kind of show instead of a wedding. Any thoughts?

Hi, we are having the ceremony outside too, weather permitting (April).

I hadn't thought about this, but then we are only having 40 to the ceremony so they shouldn't be too far back.

Have you spoken to the venue to see what they 'normally do'.

Have a chat with the venue. The wedding needs to take place in a licensed structure and sometimes there's a sound system & mic built in to what they provide.

Yes - ours was outside and we had a microphone, it was relatively simple and cheap to hire the PA system (though we were abroad - but I can't imagine it'll be much more complicated here though!)

Unless your venue is next to a motorway I don't think you will need anything. 😃

And you are potentially just adding elements that could go wrong, this wedding I shot I could still hear from all the way around.

If your groom is softly spoken, and that's how he is, would he perhaps feel self conscious having his voice amplified.

We are also (weather permitting) getting married outside and have been thinking about this too... I think we probably will have a microphone if the venue doesn't have a PA system, as I have been at weddings before where we haven't been able to hear what's been going on and it's a bit of a shame. Also thinking about readings etc., that there's not really a point in doing them if people can't hear. But then again, we will have around 150 people so some people will be quite far back!

    Hi there,

I provide PA hire for couples like yourselves looking to either amplify sections of the ceremony such as the vows or for recording purposes. There are a couple of ways you can do this...

Firstly, check with your venue, some venues that do ceremonies outside already have systems in place that you can use.

If a venue doesn't provide such a system then it's always worth checking with a local DJ or PA hire specialist who can not only deliver and install a "discreet" PA system (i.e. you don't want huge unsightly black speaker boxes on stands ruining the perfect look of your outdoor ceremony) but you also need to make sure that the kit is up to the job.

A DJ for example may provide microphone stands with handheld microphones or tie-clip style microphones. In my own experience I tend to get better results using the handheld microphones however it's not always practicable to hold a microphone whilst for example exchanging rings!

There are other styles of microphones you can use and a PA specialist will be able to quote accordingly depending on the venue you have chosen.
