Party buffet help - Costco Sandwich Platters

Katiefar, 9 September, 2009 at 10:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

Hi,

I wonder if any of you are able to help me.

I am planning to have a few people round (perhaps 20) for some nibbles and drinks before we go out drinking for my birthday in a few weeks. My H and i normally do a full-on buffet but, this means we end up cooking for most of the day (which with a 3 year old we really havent got time)!
Has anyone got any experience of buying sandwich platters from places like Costco, Sainsburys etc and have you got any reccomendations and do you know a price of the costco ones? I know Sainsburys do sandwich platters which cost = £15 for 32 triangles. I thought that we could buy some sandwich platters and a load of crisps etc. Also would you expect salads or something like that to be served with them (as i suppose i could do a cous cous salad, potato salad and greek salad). Also would you be happy with this - this is prior to going out drinking for my 30th!

Or does anyone have any suggestions on what to do which wont take hardly any time to produce with min clearing up!

Thanks a lot
x

Lazy option.. how about chucking a few pizzas in the oven? With a bit of salad too.

For a quick easy buffet I always do rolls/ baguette (the part baked ones go down a storm) and put out cheese, pate, smoked salmon, ham (boil up a gammon) , chicken (roast a whole one and cool) then some salads and maybe quiche or something. Minimal preparation but quite filling.

I have heard good reports of M&S but guess they could be quite expensive. As for what to expect it really depends on what you have said or put on you invite. If nibbles and drinks a cold buffet sounds fine. Altho like the pizza idea too !

I have ordered the Costco ones in the past and they were good value but I wasn't keen on their sandwich selections.

I often order the M&S sandwich platters as they are cut into quarters and are much better for nibbles. Also, M&S do a selection of 50 items for around £3. They are not available to pre-order but they are often in the 3 for 2 offers and they contain mini sausage rolls, mini sausages, mini scotch eggs and bacon bites. They're yummy!!

I agree with the pizza and salad idea. Costco pizzas are lovely and a good price thought they are huge so check it'll fit in your oven, We got some for our litlte boys birthday last year and they only just fitted in!

I'd do a big cheeseboard or two with lots of crackers, bread, grapes, chutney etc then pate and/or a ham with salads.

Minimum fuss but nice food. I'm not a huge fan of supermarket sandwiches and scotch eggs etc so cheese and bread etc before going out would be ideal. Depends what you think your guests would like?

What time are people coming round? TBH in your shoes I'd just do nuts, olives, crisps etc and make it clear you're not doing a meal at your house. If you're starting late people can eat at home, otherwise can you get food wherever you're drinking?

Sorry, not really an answer to the question but that's what I'd do.

Why not just go with the subway party sandwiches / platter?

It's probably way cheaper; I've done it before and the service was great. Everybody loved them too.
