Passport Fees when changing name

Lou xxx, 1 December, 2008 at 13:01 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi All,

Am I correct in thinking that in order to have my name changed on my passport once married, it's going to cost the full £72 passport fee? I am really fuming as I only had my passport renewed last year and I naively assumed there would only be a minimal admin charge if anything at all to pay!!!

Sorry if this seems trivial in the scheme of things, I just think it's a rip off!!!

I think/read they take into account how many pages are in your passport or how many years you have left and you get discount........ i have no solid answer but someone will let you know. failing that, look at the passport website??

So i see..... this is what I was referring to..

If you have recently changed your name, or if you plan to do so in the near future, you will have to change the name on your passport if you want to travel abroad.

This means your current passport will be cancelled and a new standard 10-year passport issued. We will credit your new passport with extra time (up to nine months) towards the unexpired time left on your old passport.

    also...

There is so much to think about when you get married or enter a civil partnership that amending your passport can easily get forgotten. Some countries may refuse you entry with an unamended passport, even if you carry your marriage or civil partnership certificate. You can check this with your travel agent or at the country’s consulate, but it is usually best to change your passport in advance.

We can arrange this for you any time up to three months before the ceremony, although you’ll be unable to use your passport until the actual day of your marriage or civil partnership.

If you apply to amend your passport before you get married you will need leaflet PD1, which explains what you need to do, and form PD2. You can get these:

    • By downloading them as PDF files (please note these links will open in a new browser window - download Newly Weds and Civil Partners (pdf, 99kb) , download Passports for Newly Weds and Civil Partners (pdf, 94kb) )
    • From our Check & Send outlets (selected Post Office® branches). Find my nearest Check & Send outlet.
    • By calling our 24-hour Passport Adviceline **** (see terms and conditions) to have them sent to you.

You will need to ask the person who is to conduct the marriage ceremony to help you complete form PD2.

might help others with a similar query to yours Smiley smile

You don't have to change your passport, as long as your tickets are booked in your maiden name. I renewed my passport in 06, married in 07 and no plans to change it just yet because I'm resentful of the cost!

Thanks both...... I did read the passport website link but just couldn't believe you have to pay the full wack. Can't understand why when you can change your Driving Licence free of charge!

I wouldn't mind but I only renewed it last year! Really annoyed about it ?

Yeah, I think I am going to keep my passport in my maiden name certainly for my honeymoon and you are right, as long as names on passport and tickets match you are ok to travel....but in the long term, how do you get on with travel insurance etc? Does that have to be in your married name? If you use your maiden name does it become invalid in the event of a claim? If you lost credit cards and they were in your married name would you be covered? A right can of worms!!!

Can I just say that men have it so easy?!?

My passport runs out in 2010, so as I'm getting married at the end of 2009, it's not too bad for me. I definitely want to get my passport in my married name before the honeymoon if we have one.

I wish there was just one website where you could type in your new name and it would sort it out for you!

Too much like hard work for my taste!!!!

I guess everyone is different but I just bit the bullet and changed mine before I went on honeymoon. I still had 7 years on my passport to go and I want to be known as Mrs so and so as soon as I can. I haven't gotten around to doing my bank stuff yet but am getting there. I would say its all or nothing - I'm getting a bit confused leading a double life at the moment! (my work email has changed etc!)

I changed my passport before my honeymoon as it had nearly run out so thought I may as well. It does mean you can't travel until after your wedding day so I had to time it right to send it off as I had to go abroad for work before the wedding and could obviously only travel in my maiden name.

I got married in July and I'm still getting around to changing my name on things. I seem to be in limbo at the moment being known as both names. Some seem really simple whilst others make you jump through hoops just to change your name. I rang my car insurance and they said my premiums would now be cheaper because I was now married. Bargain I thought but then they decided I'd need to pay an admin fee to change and that I would then owe them £25. So I haven't bothered changing it.

The bank took forever as they kept saying my signatures didn't match dispite them watching me sign their forms - but that's a whole other rant.

I think I'm going to have to do the same........ too complicated to change some things and not others although the passport can wait until I am likely to travel abroad again, after I am married!

Tell me about it! I got married on August 2nd and still have some stuff in my old name. My Barclaycard, Lloyds TSB credit card, Nationwide credit card all let me change my name over the phone. My Shell Drivers Club loyalty card can only be changed if I send them the original marriage certificate! So that's still in my maiden name. Dentist wanted marriage certificate, doctor didn't. It doesn't make sense who wants the certificate and who doesn't.

My Amazon mastercard... don't even get me started! I rang expecting to be able to change it like I have for all the other credit cards, but they said they had to see the marriage certificate, photo ID and my proof of address, which I'd have to take to a Halifax branch (Halifax underwrite Amazon mastercard). I took it all in and the branch didn't have a clue what to do with it, so I called Amazon from the bank manager's office. They said the branch had to photocopy the documents and sign to say they'd seen the original, then fax it through. Wouldn't give me the fax number because "the branch will know it". The branch didn't know it, so the manager called for me and the person in the call centre didn't know the number!! Eventually he found the number and sent the fax, then gave me the signed copies and the delivery report from the fax machine. Next statement arrives a couple of weeks later, still in maiden name. I called them, they claim not to have received the fax, I have to send the documents to them with a covering letter! I haven't bothered yet. They're fcuking useless!
