Passport in Married Name?

Masal, 30 July, 2008 at 15:54 Posted on Planning 0 14

Just wondering who is applying for their passport in advance?

The Travel Agent has said we dont need to and can just take the Marriage Certificate, but the Passport Site has said some countries dont like post-dated passports. I have checked about the Maldives and they have said as long as its a valid passport they are ok.

Think I am just being silly, thinking that its tempting fate to do it in advance!!!

What do they mean by some countries dont like post dated passport?

I would assume that all countries would require a valid passport?

I dont need to worry about this as I get married in November and go on honeymoon in April. If I was going abroad after, I would try and sort it so I travel on my passport in my married name. Could not be bothered to take the certificate with me - just another thing I would probably loose!

I applied for a passport in my married name before the wedding, but you have to remember that it means that your other passport becomes invalid and the new passport is not valid until the date of the wedding.

If you are not changing your passport in advance then you MUST book your honeymoon flight tickets in your maiden name. No airline will let you travel with tickets & passport in different names, even if you have your marriage certificate with you.

I'm not sure what you mean about post dated passports ??

Post Dated was the term the Passport Agency gave to it on their website.

As it turns out the Travel Agency called me back to confirm the details quicker than I could get back on here, so, I have gone with their advice and booked it in my maiden name and use my existing Passport. I only renewed it last year so as she said, to change it into my married name would just be an added expense we could do without and she said there wont be any problems!!

We have to take our Marriage Certificate with us apparently anyway to qualify for the bonuses we get being on Honeymoon, tho think I will be a nervous wreck in case is goes missing!!

I'm just taking my old passport and changing it later.

As you have said, you will need your marriage certificate to prove you are a honeymoon couple.

I'va already had mine done - there was no hassle and I got it back within 2 weeks!

I'm a manager for the Identity & Passport Service, so if anyone has any questions re getting this done just give me a shout!! I musr say that my passport application was sent to the office in Newport, which is obviously not the office I work in so they would've had no way of knowing that I worked for them.

I found it very very strange booking the honeymoon as Mrs D - and signing Mrs D!!

I had to practise loads of times to find one I liked before signing my passport application form!!

Umm..OK..my wedding is not until May next year and we go on honeymoon 3 days after the wedding. Could I apply for my new passport now with my new married name on??? Then I will book holiday in my married name too? How soon can I apply??

You can only apply 3 months before your wedding date IIRC and you need to get a form signed by your minister/registrar. You also have to send off your old passport and your new one is not valid until the day of your wedding so it's not so good if you're planning on leaving the countries in the weeks before your wedding.

    HTH.

Memedoaky, please correct me if I'm wrong!

Mine was no real worry though tbh. All I had to do was collect a form from the post office then take it to the registrars to sign, then 3 months before I put the registrar form, my old passport, the photos and the new passport forms in an envelope along with a fat cheque and took it to the post office for their check and send service. Two weeks later I had my new passport, not too much trouble really. Didn't mean to put anyone off ?

Oh KB not content in stealing Beth's kebab you want my job too!!! ?

    Yes you are correct!!

Its not as complicated as it sounds - all you need is a passport application form, known as the SE04 form, a PD1 (which has all the info on it) the PD2 (this form as 2 parts, one of which you complete the other of which your minister or registrar will complete) 2 new passport photographs (the photo's do not need to be contersigned unless there has been significant facial changes from your exsisting passport), your current passport and the fee of £72 if submitting through the standard postal service, £79 is using the post office check & send service, £97 if using the guarnteed fast track 7 day service (appointment only at the passport office) or £114 if using the guarnteed premium 4 hour service (again appointment only at the passport service).

Both forms must be completed in black ink and capital letters, the application form needs to be completed in your married name and signed in your married name, the PD2 must be completed in your maiden name.

The PD1/2 form is available to download from www.ips.gov.uk unfortunatley the application forms are on machine readable paper so can't be down loaded - but you can log onto the website and complete the form online.

As has been previously stated it can only be done any time from 3 months before the wedding (e.g my wedding is 06/09 so I could only do mine from 06/06), your new passport will be valid from your wedding day and your old passport is returned to you canceled so you have no passport during this period!!

    Hope this helps

    Luv Victoria

    xx

I'm doing mine, i'll be getting the vicar to sign the form when we go for the rehearsal on saturday. I'm lucky though in that i have 8 weeks after the wedding for the honeymoon so i don't really need to rush and do it before then, i just am doing it in case they have a sudden rush on passports at the passport office.

TBH i wouldn't risk taking my marriage certificate in case i got there and they said that i needed the passport and the marriage certificate wasn't satisfactory.

Just a quickkie, does the registrar that fills out the form have to be the one where you are getting married or, if you are getting married miles away from where you live can you get one of your local registrars to sign it?

Has to be the registrar's who are marrying you that sign it. Ive just sent mine off, personally I wouldn't have bothered but I needed to renew it anyway. It now means I cant go abroad until my honeymoon, so h2b's stag night is in poland and mine is in leeds, lol. I dont mind really.

when i do eventually get round to it it will be funny booking holidays in my married name...
