People who live in/near Cambridge - qq about living there

Dr Svensk Tiger, 21 May, 2008 at 12:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

H and I are moving to Cambridge next month as I've been offered a job there for three months. We're just looking at properties (to rent) and were considering living in Cambourne as it is a lot cheaper than Cambridge. We would love to live in Cambridge itself but I don't think we could afford more than a 1 bed flat and we'd like something bigger.

Does anyone know a) if Cambourne is a nice place to live, and b) what other towns/villages nearby would be worth considering? We know nothing about the area so any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Requirements are:

  • We need to be on the West side of Cambridge for my job.
  • We don't want to pay more than £800 per month for a house/flat with a minimum of 2 bedrooms.
  • Needs to be easy access to Cambridge by bus (2 buses might be ok though).

?

Personally I hate Cambourne - it's soulless and bland. But I guess for 3 months or so it would be all right.

I live to the south so not really in your neck of the woods. It's worth looking at St Neots as the X5 bus stops there and comes in through the west of Cambridge.

Am I right in thinking you're doing something with physics? Would you be based along Madingly Road?

ETA: everyone cycles everywhere so it's not the end of the world if you're not on a bus route. Cycle routes are pretty good.

Currently cambourne is without electricity, there's my news shocker (not permanent, just at this moment in time).

Cambourne is ok, but it's still being developed so there is only one pub for many, many houses.

There's tonnes of places on that budget and location, Waterbeach, Huntingdon etc, or the other alternative is to look at the train line, Anywhere from Royston up is worth considering and generally nice

I would avoid Cambourne too for the same reasons seraphina gave. We used to live north of Cambridge, so that's the area I know best and I haven't a clue about buses anymore, so can't help there! Where will you need to be traveling to for work? You might also need to consider any disruption to roads that might be caused by the work on the guided bus route. Last time we were home, the main road into our village was closed and another one was severely disrupted.

Not physics but yes I will be based on Madingley Road.

I don't cycle so bus route route is fairly essential, it doesn't have to be really easy access as most days I will have a lift from H. It's just for two days every two weeks I'll need to make my own way there. Will look at St. Neots, thanks.

    Hi

I used to live in Cambourne and IMO if you avoid Lower then you are OK
after 3 months youi might be ready to leave though! check out the Cambourne Froum.

Bus services round here once you are out of 'Cambridge' can be sporadic.

    Where will you be working?

Have you thought of the villages? Bourne, Toft, Caldecote, Coton?

Feel free to PM me if you Want.

NN - I hadn't thought of the train, thanks. Needs to be not too far away though as most days I'll be going by car. Definitely worth me having a look at the trains though.

CJJ - I'll be based on Madingley Road. Thanks for the tip about the work on the bus routes, I probably wouldn't have thought to check out anything like that.

This is so difficult! We're in Edinburgh and are going down a week on Friday to find somewhere to live and literally have to find somewhere that day! Argh! I wish we could just find somewhere in the centre but I know we won't be able to afford anything decent.

I find Cambourne a nice place to live and have been here 2 years.

Development ceased on Lower Cambourne about 3 years ago. There is still some development ongoing in Great Cambourne and Upper Cambourne is also being developed.

There is only 1 pub that is true. There are also some small shops (chemist, bank, dry cleaners) up in Great Cambourne together with a Morrisons. Unfortunately that is the downside to Cambourne, not a whole load of amenities.

There are some lovely open spaces and a country park to go walking in too.

Buses I am not too sure about. They are quite regular and I know they go to Cambridge but I dont know about times I am afraid.

Only one pub isn't a problem, I doubt we'd go to it anyway. I hadn't really considered amenities or lack thereof, I'd just assumed we would go into Cambridge for shopping etc. The only thing we do need is a decent gym, though we could go travel for that too, as long as it's within probably 20 min drive it doesn't matter. Thanks!

I live about 6 miles from Cambourne and have friends that live there. I wouldn't choose too but I like living in the countryside. Some parts of St Neots are pretty grim but others OK - there's a couple of new developments that might be worth checking out. The villages mentioned are lovely but very expensive and it might be difficult to find property there. I don't want to give too many details here but if you want to PM for info then do so. ?
