Peritonsillar abscess - any medical peeps?

Dove, 28 April, 2008 at 15:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 1

I saw the out of hours GP on Saturday afternoon with a very painful sore throat, talking was painful and it was affecting my speech and ability to eat/drink. She prescibed a pencillin antibiotic (phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg 2 tablets 4 x daily x 10 days), she did suspect their could be an abscess behind my right tonsil. Anyway Sunday I felt worse until the abscess burst (yuk) and now the pressure is off I feel much better. My question is should I go back to my GP for a follow up, is this antibiotic enough now that I know it is an abscess, and is it ok for it to drain on its own with out causing me any ill effects?

I'd wait until the end of your 10 day course of antibiotics.

If you have no symtoms, it might be worth ringing your dentist to say all is well.

If you experience any other symtoms, or it re-occurs, you'd probably be better with your GP and an ENT referral as this isn't really a dental issue.

    ?

Just wasn't sure if those antibiotics would be enough as GP was just giving them for a very sore throat and work colleague had had a strep. throat infection too. It was never a dental issue, just started off as a very grotty cold.
