Photo Albums

Just a quick one!

We're currently about to book our photographer, between two of the offered packages. They're £600 different and the only change is a physical print album.
Has anyone else decided against the photographers providing the album, and gone with a printing company instead? And wpuld you recommend?
Of course I understand that ithe album from the photographers themselveswill be amazing quality, lots of care, and well put together. On the other hand, we're trying to save some money!

I dont offer albums - haven’t done so a few years now. The problem is that I need to supply a good quality so that it doesn’t fade or fall apart otherwise you will come straight back to me.

So I have to buy the more expensive ones to start with, then I need to buy samples and have a collection of them but then the manufacturer discontinues that range and I am left with useless samples. So that extra cost is built into every album a couple has from me= more expensive.

Then there is the design and the back and forth with the couple on album lay out choices on top of the actual computer time in designing the album and all that extra time that has to be factored into the album = more expensive.

So you tot up all the cost and yes you might be looking at £600 but the actual album from the printers may of cost me £200

I also dont do them any more because I am actually too busy photographing weddings and editing the images, and concentrating on that allows me to deliver the wedding photos within 2-3 weeks.

Also if you are getting a "free" album included in a package then if you factor in all of the above then that included album is going to cost the photographer maybe £50 - it wont be a £200 one. An it can be used as a "sell up" to get you to "invest" in a more expensive one.

I give my couples full res colour perfect images for them to get their own albums printed at a lower cost than I can supply and with the benefit of them being able to include their own snaps in the album too.

That's a very good point - I hadn't even considered how much that would jump up. I also hadn't considered adding our own pics in! Thank you so much, this is really helpful

Glad I was of some help. If you go with your photographer album you need to check how many pages and images it includes and how many - if any design choices you will be allowed. Or is it "leave it to us we know best"

To save time in actually designing it themselves some photographers opt for a design and print option so that the printers do everything and the photographer pays them. Upload 40-60? photos and the print company does everything and the photographer juts puts £xxx on top.

Thank you Bill. That's really handy. I'm not getting married until next year but I'm going to print this off.

We just printed our own photos with an online company, and I bought an album and some photo corners from a stationers and put it together myself. I really enjoyed doing it, and as a bonus, I got to include some of our wedding cards, pressed flowers from my bouquet, a copy of our wedding invite and order of service and other bits and pieces that we wouldn't have got in a standard photo album. A couple of people have told me it 'won't last', but bearing in mind the cost, we could easily afford to redo it every few years if we wanted to, and besides, I know a few folk whose professional photo albums are falling apart after 10 years or so!

I know a couple of people who used an online 'photo book' service for their weddings and they came out really well too - again, if they don't last, it's not a big deal to redo. It's an option we might have considered if we hadn't wanted to include non-photo items and also I prefer putting things together manually than on a screen!

Yes a photographer supplied album should be quite expensive for the reasons given so if its cheap or "free" then it may not be what you think. Some will offer a "free" album as a way to make themselves look more value than the next guy but really albums can be picked up very cheaply - same as "50 photo prints included" - they actually cost pence each to print and when you are given your full res files you can get your own printed anyway

Just make sure to check reviews and maybe order a sample if possible, to ensure the quality meets your expectations.
