Photographer and their meal

Lauren, 15 October, 2021 at 23:31 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 9
We are getting married in August 2022 and have just started looking for a photographer.

What is the correct etiquette for their meal? Are we expected to pay for their meal and allow them to join our guests? We are planning on having a photographer from the ceremony until the first dance (1230pm - 8pm).
Thank you.

Hi - yes you are usually expected to pay for their meal. However, speak to your caterer/venue - ours do a "supplier" meal i.e. the same thing they give to their staff which is much cheaper than giving your photographer and anyone else who needs feeding the whole thing. It tends to be just the main course of what guests are having.

I'm not sure about etiquette, but I think it's a nice thing to do - I have friends who are wedding photographers, and they usually take a bag of snacks with them, because quite often, they don't get offered anything by the couple. But I know they really appreciate it when they do. And it's not a huge amount of money to spend to make someone's working day so much more enjoyable.

I'd have a word with the photographer and ask him/her when they would prefer to eat and also where - unless they're your friends and would be at the wedding even if they weren't photographing it, they'll probably prefer to sit separately so they can have a break.

Thank you! We’ve narrowed down our list of photographers so when we start our consultations I’ll add food to the list of questions. I have no objection to paying for a suppliers meal, it just seemed odd to pay for them to have 4 courses and to sit with guests ☺️

I don't think you should feel obligated to feed your photographer. They cost a fair amount of money in the first place (which I do think is justified) but our meals are £100 pp and sod am I paying an extra £100 to feed a supplier 😆

They're working for you all day and need a break. Yes you should feed your photographer, most venues will do a supplier meal. We sat our photographer on a table with our friends, but she preferred to sit outside of the wedding room by herself.

We said to our photographers and videographer to order from the hotel and charge it to our room and let the hotel know we had given permission for 3x meals to be charged. We ended up paying £60 which we thought was reasonable.

I'm more than happy to feed my photographers. They will either have one of our main course options or the money equivalent to but something else from the hotel food range and charge it to my room.
