Piggy bank joy!

allthatglitters, 19 August, 2008 at 10:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

Well, how about that. I have a ceramic piggy bank that you are supposed to fill then smash, but I chipped away at the base last night and emptied it! I have just been putting pound coins in since Christmas..... £214! ?

The bank is going to lurrrve me! ?

Going to try and seal it back up again and start again.

    Tell me about it!

My husband doesn't like coins other than £1 so any other change gets chucked in his old quality street tub. At the last count he had over £80 made up from 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 1p and 2p coins. I'm the mug who sat there sorting and counting in to money bags for him.

At least that's the majority of his holiday spends sorted.

I save 20ps and over the course of a year i perhaps save about £100 which i stick into my ISA. I don't miss them and it's nice when it's added up and banked

Fab! I love piggy bank spends.

We have a old bottle we fill with loose change. We say it's for holiday spends or Christmas spends for the girls. They hunt the house and car for odd coins that have fallen out of our pockets etc and top the bottle up. Last count was for Spain, £130 they got - they use the coinstar in supermarkets.

£214 is great. My dad has one that is meant to equal £500 when full. It's currently empty.

Me and H through all our change in an old Miniature Heroes tin at the end of the day, we through 1ps right up to 50ps in. We normally manage to put away around £400 a year into our savings. I also save £20 a month with my Mum so I will have around £300 at Christmas, which will come in handy for presents/food etc.

Is that one of those machines KB3?? Do you just tip your money in and it gives you notes back? How does it work?

We save coins from 1p to 50p in an old cigar box. regularly bag em up and then leave the bags in a rucksac to take to the bank. i think we've got almost £200 now. that was going to be spent on wedding rings but seeing as those were bought (and used!) 6 months ago, i think it'll be spent on holidays.

i also save £2 coins - i'm saving for a ridiculously expensive handbag and am now half way there. although the prices have just gone up. i don't think i'll ever buy it.

always wanted a terrimundi, but can't trust myself not to smash it open "just to see" how much is in there. ?

I empty my purse out every time I come home into the jar, probably why there is so much in there! I have been known to empty H's pockets before I do a wash - just of the change .... he should have checked them first though. Finders keepers and all that ?

£214 is fab, you can enjoy your hols now. Where do you get a piggy bank that you can't take out of then? That sounds like a good plan.

My H puts all his loose change on the side and it goes in an empty roses container, when it's full we put it in a Coinstar machine. The last one had about £50 in it. Then it goes in MissSun's bank account.

The Coinstar machines take a percentage, you get a receipt and take it to the check out (well you do in Sainsbuggers) and they will either give you the cash or you can put it towards your shopping.

We need to go again cause the Roses container is full and I'm having a job to lift it and and out the cupboard.

Yes. You pour your money in, 1p per pound goes to charity (or their commission I can't remember which). The machine prints a receipt which you take to the kiosk and they give you the notes.

Sunset - I got mine from Clintons, It's purple and has 'holiday fund' on it. You are supposed to smash it when it's full but I was very carefull with a happer and screwdriver and chipped a hole in the bottom ?
