Pilates anyone ?

smitten, 29 December, 2008 at 21:50 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 3

HI ? Havent been on WL for a good couple of years but its time I came back and made an effort to lose some of the weight I have piled on in the last 4 months !

I'm ok with the eating side of things once I set my mind to it and my H supports me 100% so no problems there but I do need to do more exercise I think - if only to tone up the wobbly bits and hopefully speed up the weightloss and maintenance.

My problem is that I dont really enjoy many forms of exercise and due to an ongoing knee problem can no longer do anything that puts strain on it eg aerobics/classes, running etc. Swimming/aquaerobics is good and I want to get back into doing that but I have also been thinking of doing pilates ? there are a few classes around here that I could try out to find one/instructor that I like.

Has anyone done pilates and a) enjoyed it b) found it helped with toning /weightloss.

I had back problems during and after both my pregnancies too so I thought this might help strengthen those areas too - just incase there is a 3rd baby some time in the future !

I know WL isnt alwasy that busy and I will be off to bed soon but will pop back later/tomorrow.

Thanks x

In my previous life (before children), I used to do pilates twice a week. It won't help much with weight loss, as you don't burn calories. But it does help a lot with toning and you feel the benefits quickly. By that I mean that you feel that you get better at it and stronger quickly.

I'd love to do it again, but I can't afford gym membership, haven't found any pay as you go classes and I have zero motivation to do exercise videos. I really miss the stretching/strength aspects of pilates - developing your core muscles will help with things like back ache.

Swimming would be brilliant for weight loss with a knee problem. I've had a 12 day pass to my mum's gym this Christmas and have really enjoyed swimming. I'm going to try to keep it up at the manky council pool. Not quite the same with no sauna or jacuzzi....

Thanks for your reply. I think I will give it a go - they do payg classes at our local leisure centre which are £4.50 a class (or £3.50 if I join as a member) - tbh if it will help tone me then that will be enough I can do the weight loss on diet alone - with some swimming thrown in and upping my walking.

I weighed myself this morning and I was 10st 5.5.lbs - Last August I was 9st 7lbs so I have put on so much weight since quitting work ! I really want to get back down to about 9st 10lbs.

    thanks

That's not a bad payg price.

I'm trying to up my walking too - I have a very small pedometer that I use for motivation - it is amazing how easy it is to be really very sedentary!

    Good luck!

Just thought I'd update ! I went to the class on Sunday morning - I really enjoyed it but it was a lot harder than I thought - most of the people there had been doing it for quite some time. I can feel it today but hopefully that means I was doing it properly. The teacher is ok - a little 'twee' for me but I think I cna cope with her. I want to go back but not sure I will be able to do every Sunday due to work commitments but will do my best ! I am hoping it will work with the weightloss to tone up the flabby bits !
