plane with escorts flying over London?

I've just got on the train home at Tottenham Hale, and two planes, both flanked by two smaller (fighter?) planes have flown overhead....anyone else see this? What might it be? I'm presuming they were flying into City Airport, and usually air force 1 flies into Stansted, so don't think it's that. One plane looked like it had a big circular attachment on the top part of it.

Sounds like an AWAC/Sentry, which is an RAF plane used for surveillance/comms and command. Not sure why it would need an escort, although it may be a trial run for an Olympics operation.
