Please be encouraging about my choice of music to walk down the aisle to!

MissReedNoMore, 18 May, 2012 at 16:45 Posted on Planning 0 23

Hello,

I am fairly new here and I get married on 9th June, this year (yes, that's this year!!).

We got engaged on 9th June 2010 so set our date for 9th June 2012 to commemorate the day, so we've had long enough to plan it really!

We have had everything sorted until two weeks ago when I had a sudden realisation that not only do I not like Katie Melua particularly (my walking down the aisle music) but every time I listen to it I cry! We have 100 guests at our wedding and crying really, really embarrasses me, so I decided I'd like to walk down the aisle to something happier and more uplifting, more iconic of me and my h2b, more Indie Rock than mushy.

The option I have come up with now is 'She Bangs the Drums' by the Stone Roses - I adore the song and there was one line regarding holy bread which would be dubious with the registrar so I've had my muso friend take it out of the song and he's cut a 100 second version of the song which fades out really nicely, as my aisle walk is a long old 90 seconds.

What I'm really after is a little bit of encouragement that it's OK to be a bit outrageous and walk down the aisle to a song that's not traditional, because it's iconic about me and h2b and that I don't have to have something mushy that I won't like as much, which will embarrass me and make me cry. I mean it might say 'Kiss me where the sun don't shine' in the lyrics, but it also says 'through the early morning sun, I can see her here she comes, she bangs the drums'. I'm taking 'she bangs the drums' to be a metaphor for making his heartbeat and I think it's really pretty.

? Help me please! It's too short notice to change it again, I just need someone to tell me it's all OK ?

Thank you xx

It's abslolutely fine! No matter what the genre of music, if it's you and means something to you then it's the right choice!

Try not to stress! I'm also betting you'll be FAR too distracted and not even HEAR the music when you walk down the aisle, a lot of brides say this on their report!

    Hiya

Sounds like a fab idea - anything you can do to make the day more personal to yourselves is brilliant, and all your guests will love it!

It's fine (and it's Stone Roses, so even better). My friend walked up the aisle to This Is The One. I had Tender by Blur, with Elbow, Primal Scream and The Doors at various points. Indie rock rocks!

I'm such a conformist in this department, I can't imagine NOT walking down the aisle to the 'safe bet' Wagner or similar.

Alls I can say is if your not 100% sure keep thinking!

Love it!! Sounds like it would make you happier so just do it! Everyone will remember it because you'd not taken the 'expected' approach to it. We've got a harpist who plays all sorts of stuff s have arranged for her to play Nothing Else Matters by metallica as we leave.

Walking in to She Moved Through the Fair. Gorgeous! Will most probably cry. lol

I love it!! We wanted Iron & Wine, but they say 'god' and we wouldn't have the foggiest how to remove it so back to the drawing board..

We're walking out to a No Doubt song though, they're not exactly traditional! And we're signing the registrar to Foo Fighters.

You should definitely have something that means something to you IMO Smiley smile

Traditional = boring! Do what you and your H2B like

On a aside- don't ask others to validate your choices or you run the risk of not having conviction in them. A dangerous game!

Agreed. The best weddings are the ones where the bride and groom's personalities show through, if its what you want then go for it.

Wow, thank you so much all of you! Your responses are amazing and have made me feel like this is definitely the right thing to do.

SassyT - you're probably right. They could probably play the birdy song and I wouldn't notice... or maybe that's pushing it a bit too far.

Simon and Alison - You're right, I did think my guests would find it strange if I walked down the aisle to something that most of them will know I'm not that keen on. Music has been such a big influence on our wedding that we have named our tables after our favourite bands. Our kiddies table for the evening is The Mamas and the Papas.

ForTheLoveofMrsB - I did think about Tender, anything by blur has to be acceptable.

IShouldCoco - I'd have thought with your name you'd be having a Supergrass song :-) I know what you mean, a lot of my friends have gone very traditional as they feel it is right for them. It's all about personal taste and what you feel comfortable with.

Weemee - The thought of Nothing else matters on the harp has sent tingles up my arms, how gorgeous!! I'm sure you'll have a beautiful day.

Ooh Lannybird, which No Doubt song are you walking out to? They are my favourite all time band, have loved them since I first heard Don't Speak at the tender age of 13. We're walking out to The You and Me Song by the Wannadies, quite well used for this purpose I'm sure, but we like it so why not?! I think the Foo Fighters are about my 2nd favourite band. One of my tables is named after them and my friends who I've seen them with are sitting at this table.

Katiechops - Thank you for replying to my post! It's made my day. FortheloveofMrsB above had This is the One!

Thank you Gracefly, you're right. I thought it would be silly really for us to have a traditional song, as nothing else is traditional about our wedding even down to the toast drink - a can of Guinness and a champagne flute each.

Thank you all again. Sorry I've gone on for so long in my reply, but you all took the time to help me out so I wanted to reply to you all personally.

Have a fab all weekend and happy planning. Xx

Yes most traditions aren't for me - I'm not being given away or any of that stuff. No veil either.

I'm a great believer in making your day as personal as possible. What's the point in having something that you don't really like just because it's 'the norm'.

We had 'It must be love' by Madness as our guest where being seated and we had 'Make you feel my love' by Adele as I walked in. This was a popular choice last year but we made it personal by having my niece singing it as I entered.

    I think it's a lovely idea.

I walked down the aisle to November Rain and 'appeared' when the music changes and it sounds a bit thundery.

Always go with what you and your partner want. I think this Stone Roses track is a great choice. Believe me I've played songs more outrageous than this for the bridal entrance! ?

I walked down the aisle to At Last by Etta James, we signed the register to Nickelback and Bruno Mars and we left to the lofty strains of Bon Jovi!!! You need to have what is right for you and stuff everyone else! My mum had a proper face on her about the music, but it was MY day and MY wedding. you will only regret it if you don't do what ypou want

Mooey - that's great! I love GnR only my OH can't stand what he calls Hair Rock and thinks that Brian Adams, Guns N Roses and Europe are all one and the same! To be honest though this is one of his only downfalls :-)

Thanks MC9320, it's good to have a musician's opinion on it.

sazzle82 - that's brilliant, I agree that it should be personal, this sounds perfect for two sports mad people!

friya - we had a friend who had Walk of Life by Dire Straits, which was really fitting. I thought about Europe's Final Countdown, but as I said before my OH can't stand it.

Thanks again for your help!! xx

Personally I love the idea of thinking outside the box, if the song has a meaning to your and your H2B then that is the perfect song to choose!

Also, when your guests hear something that they don't expect (not traditional music) it will give them an extra jump! And can also set the "theme" for the day!

    Xx
