PLI for DJs

brideseekingblush, 14 October, 2009 at 13:07 Posted on Planning 0 4

I think this is a really specialist question, but here goes...

We're planning our wedding at the moment, and we've been told that if we bring in our own djs we'll have to make sure they have PLI - but isn't this a venue thing? Do we just need to sort it for the night? Has anyone else found this?

I would have thought it's the venues responsibility.

Do you know any dj's you could ask?

This is a standard for most venues. Most DJs will have public liability insurance. The venue wilkl no doubt have insurance too but if the DJ's equipment starts a fire then the venue's insurance will be seeking the cost back from the DJ's insurers.

It shouldn't cause you any problems so long as you use a decent DJ (i.e. not a family member who happens to own some speakers)

ETA it may well be part of the venues insurance policy to ensure all suppliers have PLI

    Hi

No, PLI is unfortunately the DJ's responsibility (its identical to a band's situation). Public Liability insurance indemnifies the holder (i.e the DJ) against costs incurred if, for example, one of their speakers catches fire and burns the venue down (worst case scenario I know but its an easy example!). Similarly if someone trips over a cable and breaks their leg and sues the DJ then they are covered.

Its nothing to do with the venue. It would be a little bit like asking a pedestrian to be insured incase a car hits them.

You should also be aware that they may ask for the equipment to be PAT tested - which is a basic electrical safety test.

Both PLI and PAT are available on a 1-day basis I believe - do a google search.

    i hope this helps

    Tony

Sorry.....bit late on here ....but this is a subject I know loads about....both being a DJ and also the organisation I help run offers PLI to DJs. www.ampdj.co.uk

Venue PLI does not cover DJs....they must have their own. Many venues insist on a minimum which can be up to £10m. Most reputable DJs (all WDJA members have this) will have their own PLI and be used to providing evidence to hotels. Djs that get their PLI through our organisation have the option of putting a PLI validator button on their website. All DJ's should carry the actual certificate anyway. It is not your responsibility to provide PLI but the DJ's.

Tony is right about the PAT testing as well. Again....a reputable DJ will carry this certificate too and also all electrical equipment will be labelled with appropriate PAT stickers.

Sorry.....just realised most of this has already been said....lol
