Plus size wedding dress

kelly504, 4 of January of 2012 at 13:45 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone knew any nice shops within the north west that stock plus size gowns, I'm looking to start trying dresses on and very nervous of having nowhere to go or the staff being horrible.

Please help!

If no one knows any shops do you have any ideas of the names of designers which make plus size gowns? That way I can have a nosey around for them in my local area.

    Hope you guys can help!

Most dress shops stock some plus size dresses, depends where north west you are I know there is a dress shop in wallasey that stocks more plus size than most!

Also most designers do plus size ranges or go up to bigger sizes, I love alfred angelo and I kknow he does. Romantica of Devon are also good.

Or call you're local stores and ask what they have in plus size.

    xx

Ian Stuart and Justin Alexander. Try The Big Day, Castleford. They might be a bit far from you, but they are fantastic x

I would def make a trip to The Big Day in Castleford. It's quite far away from me and it was well worth the trip! I am a 24/26 and honestly I could have tried on over 20 dresses, maybe more. I got fed up of ringing boutiques and being told "yes we stock plus sizes" cos some of them class a 14 as plus size! I went to a plus size specialist in Manchester and they had 1 gown in a 24 and 1 in a 30, both were hideous and ill fitting. The Big Day is 100% worth the visit.

I'll second MrsJW2be - Sonsie dresses are lovely, I tried one on last year and it pulled me in in all the right places. I ended up though with a bridesmaids dress from www.phoenixgowns.co.uk as I didn't want to spend loads and they can provide lots (and lots) of 'scaffolding' lol - if you look on their page they'll give you a list of stockists.

It can be daunting though when you go into a shop and everything is a size 16 or under - I looked at designers I liked then contacted the stores near me that stocked them to see if they had the designs I liked in stock in a bigger size or if they had any other plus size dresses from other designers.

I was lucky - I went to 5 shops and the staff were lovely in all apart from 1 - and what I think made it even better was that none of the assistants were skinny things either so knew the challenges I was faced with.

I'm another one that recommends the Big Day in Castleford, it is a 4 hour round trip for me but it is well worth it. You can try on ANY dress, it is amazing! I'm a 24/26 and wasn't made to feel it all I, I was so nervous but I needn't have been, my dress shopping day there was an amazing experience!

As for designers, there are lots now that do plus size ranges, if you look on the Big Day's website there is a list of designers that they stock so that could be a good place to start. The dress I chose was Sincerity+ and the corsetry is brilliant, makes me feel amazing, even though the sample in the shop was too big (amazing feeling, having a dress TOO BIG!)

Good Luck and Enjoy it, it honestly doesn't have to be the horrible experience you're expecting it to be.
