Plus-Size Wedding Dress/Justin Alexander

FabSab07, 10 January, 2013 at 13:57 Posted on Planning 0 21

Dear all,

I'm hoping for some good advice. I'm beginning to start looking for my wedding dress - and I've seen a beautiful one by Justin Alexander that I love, but does anyone know how costly these are? I haven't been able to find out just yet... maybe someone out there has brought one and can let me know aprox, as cost is also a factor.

Also... do JA dresses come in plus sizes?

And does anyone have any recommendations about where to search for plus-size gowns?

Thanks!

Sabrina

My dress as a Justin Alexander and was £1000 - I think they normally range from about £900 to £1600.

That's a beaut! I seem to be quite drawn to JA dresses to (size 18-20) but that's a bit out of my budget...! ☹️

I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find anything to try on at all- people kept telling me that dresses came up small- so I was really panicking...no need! The last dress I tried on was actually a 16 and it fit pretty much perfectly! ?

    Hi Sabrina,

    Where abouts are you?

I specialise in plus sized (hate that phrase but its one we all recognise) wedding dresses and have over 80 in store in sizes 16 through to 30. I also stock Justin Alexander and have an 8465 in a size 18 at the moment. I have 9 other JA dresses in sizes 16 through to 24 but as well as this designer I have Mon Cheri, Mori Lee Julietta range, Callista, Trudy Lee, MGNY and Veromia.

The majority of my gowns are around the £1000 mark but they do start from £660 and go up to £2000 for something completely out of this world. Ive also got a sale on at the moment with a genuine 50% off dresses.

The Justin Alexander dresses do come up a little small and they tend to be zip and button back so dont have the flexibility in sizing of the lace up backs but dont let that put you off as their designs are exquisite and the construction is absolutely amazing. They are also very supporting so please dont think that because you are a larger lady they wont offer the same look because take it from me they do.

Try & find someone who stocks Sincerity dresses. They have a plus size range & it's a lovely. I think most gowns can be ordered in a lot of sizes though.

Im in a small town called Deeping St James on the Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire border. It sounds remote but im only about a 15 minute drive from the A1 at Stamford and Peterborough so its fairly easy to get to. Im open evenings and weekends (including Sundays) but they tend to get booked very quickly.

One thing about JA dresses though is they do chsrge a fairly hefty surcharge for a plus size. Some boutiques may pay this surcharge thrmselves, others may pass it on to the customer so when comparing prices between shops it may explain why Kharv for instance may have paid less than someone who has had a bigger size.

    Hi all,

£1000 is way out of my budget. Such a shame because JA dresses are stunning. I've still got a lot of looking around to do though.

Embrace: I'm based in Devon, but am happy to drive if I can get what I want! I'm probably a size 18-20 but it can vary a bit, so would need to try things on. I think the dress in question was 8656 (can double check)... where are you based? Perhaps I should pass you my personal email? I'd like to find out more.

    Best,

    Sabrina x

    Hi Sabrina,

Im a fair trip for you as Im up near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. I did have a bride travel from Bristol last summer as there was a dress she desperately wanted to try. It turned out that it really didnt suit her, which was a shame, but at least she was able to rule it out after 4 months of looking for it locally.

Justin Alexander dresses are beautiful. I cant fault their quality or construction one little bit. Unfortunately that workmanship does carry a bit of a price tag.

I dont unfortunately have 8656 in store but I do have 8596 but again it is over the £1000 price label.

If you dont mind doing the journey you could at least try the Justin Alexander, along with any of the other 80 dresses I have here (and another 15 in the sale) then you may have time to look for one on preloved if you know it suits you. Im always happy to sell the sample too at 75% of the original cost, which may bring the dress a lot nearer your budget if it fits you.

Feel free to drop me a line at *********@*********************.**.**

That's not a million miles away from me. I have friends in Peterborough so I'm familiar with the drive.

I may tie in a visit to them with coming to see you as I'd love to see what dresses you have. I've fallen for a dress from the Sincerity Plus range but feel I should try more, just in case! This is the dress, do you have anything along these lines?

I certainly have lots of gowns with sweetheart necklines. It looks from the pic thats its a diagonally pleated bodice, drop waist and tulle overlay on the skirt? Im viewing on my phone so its not too clear but i certainly have dresses with all of those elements and more. A lot of my dresses are on my website www.embracebridalboutique.co.uk though i have had a few new ones in so it needs a few adding. please take a look and drop me a line if theres anything you want to know. Fab figure by the way!

I had a plus size dress from Veromia, the Sonsie range is very good, I was extremely pleased and surprised with how well structured it was and was designed especially to hold you in in all the right places and give you a great shape.

They are indeed, they are also one of the few companies that do dresses in colours. I currently have gold, pale gold, burgundy, shell pink and rum pink dresses byVeromia in stock and im eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new aubergine and cappucino dresses to come in

I love the sweetheart neckline! The overlay on the skirt is organza.

I'll check out your website. I may well be able to tie in a visit to you with visiting friends in Peterborough.

Thank you for that lovely comment about my figure xx

Your welcome Sarah. Some dresses need curves to show them off to their best!

Are Veromia and Sonsie similar prices to the Justin Alexander dresses?

I did wonder if it might be possible to rent a wedding dress for the big day... has anyone done that before?

Sonsie can actually work out cheaper than JA as the JA dresses tend to be made of lace with lots of beading whereas the Sonsie are usually tafetta/satin which is a less expensive fabric. The Sonsie fit is incredible though as they have an internal corset with hooks and eyes that really hold you in.

Another option is Mori Lee's Julietta range who have really pushed the boundaries for designs available for the plus sized bride. They recognise that just because you are a bigger girl you may well want a fitted gown and you can look incredible in it. Ive recently received my new season dresses and they are going down a storm. Price wise they are probably on par with JA.
