Pointless Extravagance, or a Petrol-head's Dream?

BubbleBees, 17 July, 2015 at 12:24 Posted on Planning 0 26

Yesterday I was struck by a whim. We're staying and marrying at the venue - there'll be no big arrival, and we're staying an extra night after everyone else leaves so no big departure either. We both like our cars, and I thought it would be a brilliant surprise if this turned up during the ceremony (if I do this I'll not be letting OH know in advance) and we have photos with it afterwards.

The fee for the presence of this lovely lady is not far short of £1000. We're not allowed to drive it, but can have photos in and out. OH recently built a scale model of the DB5 (and fancies himself an international man of mystery) so it has a bit of significance for us.

I can't decide if that's too much to pay for a glorified (and gorgeous) photo-prop. I can afford it, I'm just not sure if its way too frivolous a whim to indulge.

It sounds like it would be something quite special for you and your other half, so if you can afford it, go for it! And it will look awesome in photos ?

I'm going to err on the side of it being just a glorified photo prop especially you can't drive it so i think too expensive. For that sort of price you could do do much in the prestige hire market if you did fancy a lush car for a day

Sorry, don't mean to be negative, but for that price, I just wouldn't.

It might be cheaper to organise a day out driving racing cars, and perhaps you can have some nice photos of you and your OH taken then.

I think it's rather expensive for a car to be sat there but at the same point if it's something you are both into then why not! If there are other cars you both like I would shop around first and see if you can get one you can go for a ride in for the same price

It all depends how much you have to spend! Personally, there's no way I'd pay it. Also, what you get from it will depend on how good your photographer is.

If it rains you might not even get decent photos with it.

Will you look back on the day and wish that you had hired it...? You're only going to do this once and it does sound like something special to you both. I mean, you're not arriving in wedding cars, which aren't cheap, and which are basically a photo prop themselves.....

Thanks everyone for your opinions so far. I'm genuinely torn. I'm in contact with a private owner too, or at least I'm waiting to hear back from them.

If it were £500 I'd do it without blinking, but for the going rate and for the length of time we need it its a steep price.

£1000 is ridiculous money, sorry! But that car is amazing, no doubt about that! I would definitely want to drive it for that money though Smiley winking

Contact a classic car club, the members are really helpful and it might just be cheaper if one of them does it for you.

    Try these https://www.amoc.org/content/view/87/186/

That's a brilliant idea! Thank you. I've contacted one private owner already but this will give me a much wider spread.

I wish I'd had this idea in mind already when we were at Goodwood a few weeks ago.I've also asked the owners of my venue if they know anyone with one.

?? Petrol head here also, well I have to be seeing as my front window over looks Goodwood motor circuit ? We asked a Lotus classic car club if any of their members would take my daughter to her school leaving party and 3 of them offered to do it for her so worth a try.

    Fantastic! Smiley laughSmiley laughSmiley laugh

Did you see that 1904 Mercedes there this year on the hill - the flames were quite something - unbelievable to see a car that hasn't been seen in a hundred years. Wow!

I'd much rather give a private enthusiast half the commercial fee as I know they'll be ploughing it right back in to the cars, plus if its a nice day they'll love all the attention on the roads too!

We get tickets for all the events and all days but I had a few weddings to photograph so I only went on the Sunday and I took my 4 year old grandson who is mad on cars? so we were stuck in the pits most of the day and looking around the display cars?.

The only track side we saw was around 4pm when we got a space, wished I had taken the bigger lens but didn't want to carry a lot around with me seeing as we started at 7.30 and didn't get back until around 6pm?.

Just a few from the day, the aircraft ones were taken from our back garden ?

The Lotus member said on the phone he didn't want anything as he would just love to do it but we forced it on him on the day plus he took her to the entrance of the motor circuit and I took some photos of him and his car and had them printed for him?

Go for it! We are having a self drive car. Hubby to be (who has a passion for Jaguar cars) has hired a Jaguar XK8 for three days to drive us from the church to the reception so lovely time/photo opportunity etc on our own after the ceremony and then off on our mini moon the following day. Just got to work out how to get in it in my dress!!

    That's a day well spent!

LOL, how big is the *bigger* lens? Largest we have is a Nikon AF VR NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED which gets us some decent shots at the track (not Goodwood here, but this was about as close as Lewis got to Seb in the Spanish GP).

Its a shame we left it too late to get tickets to the Revival! Always next year!

Damn, none of this is helping convince me NOT to have the DB5!

I only took the 24-70 with me but for fos I normally take the 70-200 which is a heavy lens to carry about just for fun?

Is it too late for the revival?

Looking at it from another angle, would your OH be disappointed that he couldn't drive it on the day? I know if I surprised my hubby with one for the day, he'd be gutted if he couldn't drive it even if it was just around the grounds. I think for £1000, it's a lot just to sit in and look at but I wouldn't mind paying more than that though if he could drive it!

Its an interesting point, but as I expect he'll have had a snifter before the ceremony I'd not be letting him near the wheel of a >£500k car on a private road let alone a public one. Their driver should be able to take us for a spin from what they said in the email I got yesterday evening.

As I haven't really splashed out on any one thing for the wedding the car seems the place to do it. Someone else suggested using the money for track days, but we do those (too) often. Its such a rare creature, only around 1020 were produced and whilst we can get close at car shows this will be special, not just for us, but for the family too.

I'd not spend a thousand quid on a dress I'll only wear once, but on this ... I'm almost decided.

One of my private options has dropped out for sure.

I checked the registration and his car has another engagement. If I go this way I might have to suck it up unless I hear from the other private owner.

    Wish me luck!

Get on to one of the clubs, I'm sure a member would do it far cheaper than £1000 but I would be disappointed if I couldn't drive it on the day?. I shot a wedding a few years ago and the groom hired one for the day, he turned up at the church with it then drove the the venue with his new wife so I'm sure you can hire them.
