Polish/english wedding location problem

Daria, 27 July, 2024 at 16:41 Posted on Planning 0 4
Hi,
I'm Polish my partner is English. We're struggling to make location work.
I want to get married in Poland and he wants to get married here. I have family in Poland who can't travel due to health and same for his family here.
Initally we thought civil ceremony here, church wedding in Poland which would make us both happy. However we fear that my family knowing there's a 2nd wedding in Poland will not come out for the wedding here and vice versa for his family. Destination wedding (different country) is also out of question as my partner doesn't like the idea.
Any couples had a similar problem before? How did you solve it? Help please 🙏 😭

I have several friends who married people from different countries, and they either had a civil ceremony in one country and a religious ceremony in the other (sometimes, only one type of ceremony was valid in one of the countries, which simplified deciding!) or else had the wedding ceremony in one country and then a wedding blessing/celebration in the other.

It's true that many people only attended the ceremony which took place in their own country, but I think that's just something you have to accept when you marry someone from another country - on the positive side, it does mean you get to celebrate your wedding twice!

That sounds really difficult, and I can see why neither of you wants the other side of the family to feel like they're attending the "less important" wedding.

One idea could be to have a small legal ceremony in one country with just immediate family, then a full celebration in the other country where everyone treats it as the main wedding. Another option is to hold two celebrations but make it very clear that both are equally important parts of your marriage journey rather than a "real wedding" and a "second wedding."

I've known a few international couples who faced similar challenges, and in the end they focused on making sure both families felt included rather than worrying about having only one perfect location. There isn't always a perfect solution when loved ones can't travel, but finding a compromise that honors both families can make the day feel special for everyone.

Wishing you both the best of luck—I hope you find an arrangement that feels right for both of you and your families. ❤️
