Poorly done wedding day makeup

Toni, 1 August, 2022 at 23:12 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 8
I need some advice please! Had my wedding on Saturday and my makeup trial a few weeks ago. I paid £100 for my trial but when the lady came over to do it she said she was only going to do half my face. I'm still not sure if this was normal or I overpaid?!

Anyway, I was really happy with the trial but on the day itself she turned up and didn't remember at all what she did for the trial. She asked me for pictures and I told her I didn't take any (I didn't realise I was supposed to). Anyway she did a makeup look that was completely different to my trial with poorly matched concealer...within an hour I had deep ridges on my face because it was so thick on a warm day. I was getting ready in a room with no mirrors so only found out when I went to the loo. Haven't seen ptofephotis yet but I look absolutely awful in all the phone photos everyone has sent me. I feel gutted that I paid almost £300 to look terrible on my wedding day. Does anyone have any advice about what I should do and whether I might be able to get some sort of refund?!

My makeup including my trial cost £170. My trial was my whole face. She took notes on what makeup she used and she also took photos for reference. She also recommended a foundation and a lipstick for me to buy so that I could top my makeup up if needed during the day. I bought them but didn’t really end up needing them as my makeup stayed all day.

So really it does sound like your makeup artist was not ok.

I’m not sure what you can do in terms of a refund but you could maybe review her so others don’t have a similar experience.
I wouldn’t worry about the photos. Don’t wedding photographers edit them a bit? Also, I think we find it easy to see imperfections in ourselves that nobody else would even notice so I wouldn’t worry about the ridges. But I can see why you’d be upset.

I hope you had an amazing wedding day! I’m sorry to hear about your experience with your makeup artist. It’s the responsibility of the makeup artist to take notes, keep a list of the products used during the trial and to take photographs for reference.
The trial being half a face is not normal! You need to know if you’re happy with the overall look and be able to see how well the makeup lasts throughout the day.
If it was me, I would complain and ask what the point of the trial was when the makeup couldn’t be replicated on the day. As Pam said, don’t worry about the photos, your photographer will edit the images. They will have been taken on professional equipment and will be very different to unedited photos taken on phones. PS. I’ve got a different career now but I’m fully qualified and spent many years working in the beauty & photographic industries.

The photographer most likely will not be editing the photos in that way unless you ask them and they probably may not even have the necessary skills to so it.

But on the other hand I think it is only going to show on quite close up face shots I would even say that it may not even be noticeable on anything taken further away than the two of you at waist height up.

I do edit the makeup as a routine but it usually only bits of mascara around the eyes from where eyelash extensions have actually touched your face. Or lipstick on teeth or when makeup has covered a spot but it still leaves a tell tale visible lump.

Other then that I do no mess with the MUA's finish unless I am asked -- which I have been on a few occasions after the photos were delivered, once to reduce the extended "smokey eyes" look that the bride was not happy with.

Congratulations on getting married - so sorry you had this experience impact your day. It's worth remembering that we are always over critical of ourselves, and I am sure that whilst your make-up wasn't what you wanted, you will have looked lovely and there will be some photos amongst them all which will do you justice. A positive practical step would be to speak to the photographer to make them aware of how you feel and see how they may be able to edit some images for you with specific request in mind. I had a full trial for £45, lots of high resolution professionally lit images taken, notes taken and we also tried a range of different lip colours before settling on the final look, so her conduct is not the norm for the industry at al. It is their job to take notes/images before you leave and then recreate the look. It would be fair to put together feedback in writing and request a full/partial refund if you want to pursue it. If you had any kind of contract/written agreement it would be worth looking at what is listed there, I would suggest attaching images to demonstrate why you are unhappy with the service. They should take your feedback seriously, and offer something to acknowledge that they didn't deliver the service you booked.

I had a lady come do a trial paid £20. I looked awful so much make up even though I said bare minimum I’ve decided to do my make up myself for the fear of looking horrible on my big day
I would try get a partial refund on the fact it wasn’t how u wanted to have ur make up done on the day and u wasn’t happy with the services

I am still trying to get my head round someone only doing a half-face makeup trial!!!!! I have never heard of such a thing - how weird!

I'm doing my own make-up too. I've had my make-up done professionally twice when I was a bridesmaid, and they always end up putting too much on and I never feel like I look like 'me.'

Much better and cheaper to DIY.

Plus, everyone seems to have professional make-up for photos, but at the end of the day a wedding should be about the moment, not the post-production!
