Post dated passport

Does anyone have any experience with post dated passports? I get married at the end of August and me and my partner are planning to go travelling the beginning of October. If we were just going for a couple of weeks I would travel with my maiden name but as we're going for hopefully a year I would really like to travel in my married name. The passport office says that some countries won't accept post dated passports for visas though? Is that if you apply for the visa before your passport is technically valid (i.e before the wedding)? Or you can't get a visa full stop if you have a post dated passport? So confused!
